The Red Sox acquired Scott Podsednik as an emergency outfielder, someone to fill the void when the injury bug ripped through the Boston regulars. Not only did he fill in, he produced nicely at the plate and when he returns from his turn on the DL, both the Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals could have an interest in him, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
The 36-year old has played in 19 games for the Red Sox since being called up on June 1 and he has a slash line of .387/.409/.484 with 7 RBI and 6 stolen bases. He’s also played well defensively, proving that his veteran legs still have plenty left in the tank.
Cafardo doesn’t discuss any potential returns that Podsednik could bring and with Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford both playing in minor league games with a return not too far away, it’s likely Boston could dump the former Phillies outfielder to make roster room.
One potential landing spot that could make sense would be Oakland with Brandon Inge‘s name swirling in trade rumors and the possible need for an everyday third baseman, should Will Middlebrooks miss any length of time. More on that later.
For now, Podsednik needs to get healthy and prove he can stay that way over the next three weeks plus. If he can, look for the Red Sox to move him once the regulars return. He’s been a nice addition even if it was a brief stint, but all good things must come to an end and it appears as though Podsednik’s tenure in Boston is at the end.
