Today in Boston, the Red Sox lost another heartbreaker and this time it really hurt. That’s because this time the loss was at the hands of the arch-nemesis New York Yankees.
The Red Sox looked poised for their first punch in the 2012 version of the “rivalry”, leading 9-0 going into the sixth inning but the Yankee bats were waiting for the opportunity to strike–and they got it.
Runs batted in from five out of the nine Sox starters–including two apiece from Mike Aviles and Cody Ross–gave the Red Sox that wiggle room but like many games recently, the bullpen folded in epic proportions, leading to a devastating loss in Beantown.
Starter Felix Doubront turned in a great outing, going 6 IP allowing just 4H, 1ER, 3BB and striking out 7 but we found out quickly that even this lead wasn’t safe.
Vicente Padilla–who’s been solid to date–got rocked to the tune of 4H, 5ER, 1BB, 1K and a HR, giving the Yanks a momentum shift they wouldn’t turn over.
Franklin Morales gave up a run in 2/3 of an inning following Padilla but the worst was yet to come.
Boston’s “closer” Alfredo Aceves came on in the eighth inning–in hopes of a two inning save–but instead got dealt his first loss of the year. Seemingly every pitch thrown from “Ace” landed between an outfielder, it was depressing to see the “Bronx Bombers” owning Fenway Park the way they were. We’ve seen it at times before but it felt different this time, the Red Sox looked hopeless for the second night in a row–something that should never happen when these teams play each other.
I’m not really sure what this team can do, but I doubt Marlon Byrd is going to solve the problems facing these Red Sox. Thing’s need to change, injuries need to mend and these Red Sox may need a while to gather their thoughts.
