Merry Season To All on The Eve Of The Day

The night before Opening Day feels a lot like Christmas Eve to me. Green fields, ridiculous sunshine and endless possibilities abound. Each year I look forward to 162 presents (possibly more) and hopefully no coal in my red stockings. Merry Season! Go Sox!

‘Twas the night before The Day
and all through the league
All the players had butterflies
not a one was fatigued

The GMs made moves
in the winter offseason
In hopes of a trophy
and fans who’d see reason

Spring training behind them
the adjustments and tweaks
Of both players and managers
designed to make streaks

The clubhouse was prepped
bats, helmets and balm
Lined the dressing room lockers
that would soon not be calm

Now Papi, now Pedey,
now Salty and Ells
Play above and beyond
to the loud Fenway yells

Our passion is yours,
the two become one
For six months or longer
’til your job is done

For hope springs eternal
when a team hits their stride
When men become boys
and we’re along for the ride

Baseball enduring
timeless and true
If you’re smart and your patient
this game is for you

So throw out the first ball
have a dog and a beer
With all of its’ faults
there’s still cause to cheer

Concede to you neighbor
their sports of all stripes
For me I’ll take baseball
no bull and no gripes

For nothing beats a game
whose essence from spring
Is hitting a round thing
with another round thing
