Mike Maddux No Longer an Option as Red Sox Manager

In a sudden change of events, Mike Maddux, the current pitching coach for the Texas Rangers has pulled his name out of the running to become the next manager of the Boston Red Sox.

The news of Maddux’s decision was released by Ben Cherington.  It was Maddux who was up next to interview for the vacant managerial job in Boston, with the scheduled appointment slated for Tuesday.

According to Peter Gammons of NESN and MLB Network, Maddux made the decision to withdraw out of family considerations.

T.R Sullivan of the MLB.com reports that Maddux has not yet removed his name for the Chicago Cubs manager position, but when you read Gammons twitter report it appears Maddux could be staying in Texas.

“We’re in a good situation,’ Maddux says of his Ranger job. ‘My family moved here, the kids will be in school for 3 more years here.'” – Peter Gammons via twitter.

It’s unfortunate news for the Red Sox and their fans as Maddux has done wonders with the Rangers pitching staff during his tenure in the ‘Lone Star state.’  He would have been a great find to help try and get a group of Sox pitchers back on track after a meltdown in the late months of last season.
