One day every year it is morally acceptable to dress up in any sort of costume your inner self may desire and parade around the workplace as if you’re in a Hollywood fashion show. Yes, it’s Halloween and while the kiddies will be collecting their candy tonight, running from house to house to secure as much loot as they can, this is a good time to reflect on the Red Sox 2011 season. After all, it was a season that ended much like that of a horror movie, filled with terrifying and gut wrenching scenes too scary to watch.
The horror movie began in April and did a great job of building up suspense right from the get go. A horrifying start, 2-10 to begin left much speculation as to who the main villan is. Like a true horror film, there was an unidentified “bad guy” but it would take a whole season, or entire movie until the culprit is revealed.
Things would start to turn around for the Red Sox as May through July saw this team as the best team in baseball. Or according to the movie script, the Sox were living life in their merry little town with the graphic start just a distant memory.
Then August rolled around and towards the end of the month, the team started to slip. As in all good horror shows the deemed “killer” was lurking, plotting his or her next move. For the Red Sox, this was the start as to what was later declared “beer gate.” Players supposedly started to sluff off workouts, drink beer and eat chicken in the clubhouse. Some players started to feel alienated and it was obvious cliques were being formed. Cue the screechy, erie suspense music…..things are about to get scary!
The final act….September. The Red Sox suddenly hit a tail spin and spiral downward in what can only be described as an innocent victim falling prey to the deadly killer. Team meetings were held to resemble those of the authorities strategically trying to piece together the mystery. Who or what is it that has this hollow like grip on this ballclub?
But the grip was too tight to be undone. The club was in a vulnerable state and as a result they faded out of the playoffs. Or, if we follow script, the killer took his final victim, slaying the postseason hopes that the Red Sox may have had. Brutally stringing along an entire Nation of fans, only to have their hearts broken and a mourning period left for many to endure.
The climax of the film has been reached and the plot has been exposed. Amongst the Red Sox there was a villain, deemed to be responsible for this epic collapse. But who is it?
First the manager takes the fall, being forced to walk away from the team that he loves and where he has celebrated so many successes. Suspect number one gets off the accusations, but too many he’s guilty.
Suspect number two suddenly flees the scene to escape to another city where he joins another team. Guilty? To many he was involved in the act, but not without assistance.
Suspects number three, four and five are players within the organization. Accused of driving a wedge in the clubhouse thanks to a party like atmosphere involving beer, chicken and video games, two of the three suspects address the media/authorities to try and clear their name. Only the third member of the so called possie remains secluded and no one has heard from him. Is he the primary suspect in this tragedy?
Other suspects have risen through the speculation and rumors. Some feel that it was the owners who should ultimately take the fall for what happened. Many feel they have blood on their hands and that they were the conductors to the conspiracy.
But the killer is still on the loose. Many suspects remain and the media (authorities) continue to investigate the case. It looks like that this is one film that won’t have a clear cut ending, but rather a sequel is needed. A sequel that will be released next April.
Happy Halloween from everyone at BoSox Injection.
In honor of Halloween I thought it might be fun to recreate the Red Sox season as that of a horror film. By no means do I link what happened during the 2011 baseball season to any real life brutalities. All words and phrases were used in a joking manner in good fun on this Halloween day.
