With the 2011 season officially over thanks to a dramatic conclusion of a fascinating World Series, it’s now time for the hardware to be presented.
Both Jacoby Ellsbury and Adrian Gonzalez could be in the running for the AL MVP award and Ellsbury has already taken home the AL Comeback Player of the Year. But both players are up for additional awards, the Greatness in Baseball Awards (GIBBY).
Ells and Gonzo, who were both all-stars this past season are recognized for their outstanding season’s and are nominated in the player of the year category. But it’s Ellsbury who has multiple nominations including defensive player of the year and comeback player of the year.
Ellsbury set career numbers this season with 32 home runs, 105 RBI and a batting average of .321. Gonzalez meanwhile hit .338 while belting 27 longballs and 117 RBI. He led the majors in batting average and RBI for most of the season before cooling off in September.
The GIBBY Awards have 19 categories and are determined by fan voting at MLB.com, members of the media, MLB alumni and front-office personnel.
Fans can vote up to 25 times per category and voting ends on Dec. 4. The winners will be announced on December 16 on the MLB network and MLB.com.
