The list of potential candidates for the next Red Sox manager just got a little longer today. You can add Texas Ranger’s pitching cocah, Mike Maddux to the short list.
It was reported earlier today by the Boston Herald that Maddux has caught the attention of the Red Sox brass. What’s not to like considering what he’s done with the Rangers pitching staff this postseason. During the 2011 season, the Rangers staff developed a team ERA of 3.79 under Maddux and a team ERA of 4.03 over the past three season’s.
Maddux is familiar with the Boston organization thanks to his time spent in a Red Sox uniform from 1995 to 1996. The man who resembles the Robert Downy Jr. character Tony Stark or better known as Ironman, pitched for the Sox for two seasons, compiling a 7-3 record with a 3.97 ERA. According to NESN’s John Beattie, Maddux spent 15 seasons in the Majors, earning a career record of 39-37 with a 4.05 ERA.
This could be a nice fit for both Maddux and the Red Sox. It gives Maddux a chance to manage a big league club for the first time in his post playing days and for the Sox he provides a high level of praise.
Whether it be in Texas or Milwaukee, Maddux has had success as a pitching coach. Boston needs someone who can relate to their pitchers and help get them back to that elite level they were once at. Maddux could be that guy.
He also seems to have a very calm demeanor to him. During game 6 of the World Series, Maddux went to the mound to talk to the Rangers pitcher Scott Feldman. There it was, the 10th inning of a World Series game and Maddux casually saunters out, smiles and appears to make Feldman laugh. Talk about composure for a pressure filled spot.
The more I watch Maddux in action, the more I’d like him to suit up in a Red Sox uniform.
According to the Herald, Ben Cherington’s list also consists of Sandy Alomar Jr., Dale Sveum, Tim Wallach, Pete Mackanin, Torey Lovullo, Ryne Sandberg and Dave Martinez. And the plot thickens……..
