Notable Numerals: David Ortiz’ Contract Year
The 2011 season was a big season for David Ortiz. It was the last year of his contract with the Red Sox and he is now set to become a free agent. To put himself in the best possible position in the market, he needed to have a solid season. Ortiz did that. Despite being 35-years-old Ortiz had one of his best seasons and now put himself in the best position possible. The Red Sox will have to pay him what he wants, or he will have options from other teams willing to spend the money on him.
This weeks Notable Numerals takes a look inside at Ortiz’ season:
.309: Ortiz’ batting average in 2011. It was his highest since 2007 and second highest of his entire career, besides his first season in which he only played 15 games.
83: Number of strikeouts in 2011. This number dropped considerably from 2010 when he struck out a career high 145 times.
.329: Batting average against left-handed pitchers. It was actually higher than facing right-handers where he hit .298.
.411: Ortiz’ batting average in August. He hit eight home runs and knocked in 20 runs in the month as well.
.180: Ortiz’ batting average against the Rays in 2011.
13: Of his 29 home runs came with two strikes.
These numbers show that Ortiz can still be one of the best designated hitters in the game, and if the Red Sox want to keep him around they are going to have to pay up, and most likely lock in him to a multi-year deal.
