Theo to Chicago Official Announcement Coming?
After a few weeks of rumors and negotiating it would appear that Theo Epstein is set to depart for Chicago and become the Cubs’ president of baseball operations. According to an ESPN report, the two sides are on the “five yard line.” The hold up in the deal has been the compensation the Red Sox would receive, since Epstein still has one year left on his contact in Boston.
According to the ESPN report, the sides were far apart at the beginning of the process. The Cubs only wanted to offer cash in return, but the Red Sox wanted top prospects. It looks like the two sides will settle on a prospect or two, but not the top prospects that the Red Sox had wanted.
The Boston Globe reported today that Epstein has still been working out his Boston Red Sox office, even today. It would appear that an official announcement would not happen tomorrow because Epstein would not have enough time to get to Chicago for a press conference. One would imagine the announcement would come early next week, or follow MLB’s wishes and wait until after the World Series.
Also in the ESPN report, current Padres general manger Jed Hoyer is set to be named the Cubs general manager once Epstein is officially announced. The pair are close friends and have worked together in the past.
