All the staff at the MLB Fansided network voted for our own MLB year end awards. The awards will be unveiled throughout the playoffs, starting today with the top manager in both the AL and NL.
Each AL award will be posted on the Call to the Pen site and we’ll break down our choice here on BoSox Injection.
And the Fansided AL Manager of the Year is – Joe Maddon of the Tampa Bay Rays.
When the staff at BoSox Injection voted, it was a tighter race between Jim Leyland of the Detroit Tigers and Ron Washington of the Texas Rangers. At the time of voting the season had yet to be completed and I believe the Red Sox had a two game lead on the Rays for the Wild Card.
Maddon is clearly deserving of the award and when the voting took place, us Red Sox fans held out optimism that our club would still make the postseason, making the Maddon vote a little more difficult.
If you check out the link above, you’ll notice that Terry Francona wasn’t on the ballot. Shocker! Somehow Joe Girardi received more first place votes than I thought he deserved. Really it’s a three horse race between Maddon, Leyland and Washington with Maddon being the most deserved recipient.
Now if only the Red Sox management could work their astute magic and get him into a Red Sox uniform for next season. Dare to dream Derek, dare to dream.
Stay tuned next week when more Fansided year end awards are handed out.
