Francona Finished in Boston?

It appears as though Terry Francona’s time in Boston as the manager of the Red Sox has come to an end.

On Thursday morning Francona met with  owner John Henry and while it hasn’t been officially announced, reports indicate that the club will not pick up either of his two year options, hence ending the Francona era.

Francona and GM Theo Epstein had a press conference on Wednesday and it was evident that Francona had lost his lust for this club.  He did all but name players and throw them under the bus.  Tito admitted that there were times, most notably in September that this club was not together and didn’t stick up for one another.  This was a team that had it all to win and is now being labelled as a group of arrogant, pre-madonna’s more worried about drinking beer and whether the bus is big enough.

Reports have come out stating that Francona didn’t necessarily want to return, which made John Henry’s decision easier.  So it appears that Francona may have lost the clubhouse in September and he’s now tired of it and needs a change.

Francona will best be known for his work that helped bring two World Series to Boston and ending the 86 year drought.  He leaves Boston with a record of 734-531 good for a .580 winning percentage.  He led the Red Sox to the postseason in five out of his eight years as manager, but missed October baseball for the past two straight years.  The postseason has become something of an expectation in Boston and now Francona’s job is over because of it.

Is Tito the one to lay blame on? He was forced to deal with these brash individuals who were more worried about themselves than their team.  Francona held a team meeting in Toronto after a 14-0 because he was concerned about some of the things he saw.  Clearly this team was too far gone at that point as they lost 7 of their next 8.

Tito won’t have to wait long if he wants to work again. There is already rumblings that the Chicago White Sox will be after Tito to fill their manager void that Ozzie Guillen left when he departed for Miami.

What do you think, is letting Francona go the right move?  Take part in the poll and let your voice be heard.
