The Red Sox entered Tampa Bay with a six and a half game lead in the wild card race. They leave Tampa Bay with that lead now narrowed to just three and a half games, thanks to getting swept away by the Rays.
Sunday’s matinee saw the Red Sox give the ball to Jon Lester, who has been Mr. Reliable in September throughout his career. Already 2-0 this year in September, Lester was opposed by the Rays rejuvinated starter, James Shields, who has a league leading 11 complete games entering the game.
A win and the lead would be back to 5.5 games and perhaps have enough breathing room to hold off the pesky Rays for the remainder of the year.
