We all need a good laugh with the Sox sitting 2 1/2 games out of first place as of this morning. Philly fans booed J.D. Drew when he came to the plate yesterday. Why did they boo? Because J.D. was Philadelphia’s first draft pick in 1997 and Drew rejected their offer to play there. Seriously???? You’re upset because you don’t have Drew? Excuse me while I roll on the floor for a while.
That has to be one of the funniest things I have heard in a long time. Hey Philly fans, you want him? Then do all of us Sox fans a favor and take him. I thought Philly fanatics were as obsessed with their team as Sox fans are with Boston. But, upset for not having J.D. Drew? Are you out of your minds? The Philly fans are so upset over it that they even booed J.D.’s brother, Stephen, when he faced the Phillies in Philadelphia. Hello!!! In case you haven’t noticed, Drew has been one of the biggest busts in Red Sox history. He is a dud; he won’t even attempt to take the field unless he is 100% healthy, and how many professional athletes are like that?
There is a long line of players in the Red Sox organization to take over right field after Drew’s contract expires this year.  Josh Reddick, Ryan Kalish and Darnell McDonald to name just a few off the top of my head. There have also been rumors about the Sox going after a Oakland’s Josh Willingham or New York Mets Carlos Beltran, at the trade deadline.
J.D., at best, is a below average player who only plays 130-140 games a year. He is the weak link in this high powered offensive lineup. I will give Drew credit for the outstanding defense,  he plays in one of the trickiest right fields in all of baseball. He is a well above average fielder with a strong arm. But, Dwight Evans he’s not, not even close actually. Lets also not forget it was his grand slam against the Indians that helped the Sox overcome a 3-1 deficit in the 2007 American League Championship series. But that doesn’t forgive all the misery he has given us.
Drew is contemplating retirement at the end of this season and we should all wish him well. Its not his fault for accepting the huge contract he got from the Sox. In fact, if you look back, he is actually a genius.
