Here I was thinking that I didn’t really have anything to write about today, with the Sox having the night off last night. I was going to write a few cliches about this upcoming series. You know like, “Cowboy up,” “Storm the Hill,” things of that nature. But lo and behold, my favorite team to hate hands me the best gift of all. The New York Skankees were trounced last night by the Kansas City Royals. Combine that loss with Tampa Bay’s win over Cleveland and you now see the Skanks going in the wrong direction in the standings.
Instead, I get to gloat about the fall of the men in pinstriped pajamas. The Royals stomped the Skanks to second place last night with a 11-5 thrashing. Skankee’s pitcher, Ivan Nova, couldn’t even get thru the fourth inning. Now they get to play their bitter rivals, in what should be a great weekend of baseball, while the Rays host the Orioles at Tropicana field. Now if you were a betting person, who do you think has the better schedule this weekend? The Yankees starting rotation has been winning with smoke and mirrors all season. Is it finally starting to catch up with them? What the Skanks have done so far is win and win often by virtue of the long ball. The lineup is still stacked with power hitters and they have been flexing their muscles all season. But , as we all know good pitching always beats good hitting. I will take my chances with Clay Buchholz, Josh Beckett and Jon Lester this weekend over the Yankee rotation of Bartolo Colon, C.C. Sabathia and Freddy Garcia.
The Tampa Bay Rays have crept their way up the standings even without the services of star, Evan Longoria, who missed substantial playing time due to a strained oblique. The Rays have one of the best starting rotations in the American League. They would give the Phillies a good run for their money for best rotation in all of baseball. Combine their pitching with a rejuvenated Johnny Damon and the Rays find themselves atop of the AL East.
Funny how this whole Universe thing works out sometimes, isn’t it? I will put my neck on the line and say the Yanks will lose even more ground in the standings this weekend.
Yes, the Sox won’t be in first place either by Monday morning. But, you know how the old saying goes “Misery likes Company.” Don’t blink Skankee fans, third place is next.
