Bobby Jenks and Dan Wheeler to DL After 13-inning Marathon

After last night’s ridiculously long game, both in time and innings, the Red Sox have made a few roster moves Thursday morning before their 1:35pm series-ending matinee with the Los Angeles Angels. After his arm cramped up in the bullpen while warming last night, Bobby Jenks has been placed on the DL, much to the delight of many fans. Also, Dan Wheeler was placed on the DL with a calf injury, although it appears this was more of an opportunity to clear a roster spot and less of an injury that should concern anyone. Scott Atchison and Rich Hill were called-up from AAA Pawtucket and are with the team for today’s game. (more after the jump)

Last season, Atchison was a solid reliever out of the ‘pen for the Red Sox, appearing in 43 games and pitching 60 innings. He had a 4.50 ERA and finished with a 2-3 record, but became an important innings-eater down the stretch. He will likely get the 1st nod out of the ‘pen if John Lackey can’t go deep into the game today. Rich Hill pitched in just 6 games last year for the Sox for a total of 4 innings, but allowed 0 earned runs on 5 hits, with 1 BB and 3 Ks, finishing with a 1-0 record. Hill provides the Red Sox with another lefty-option as well, which is important considering Hideki Okajima has struggled in his brief stint in the majors so far this season, allowing 4 earned runs in 6 innings, 3 of the 4 runs coming off of lefty-batters.
