Josh Beckett:Too Much of a Good Thing?

Tonight we are going to find out first hand if the saying, “Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing, ” when Josh Beckett takes the mound.  As much as all of us have enjoyed Beckett’s recent return to prominence, was it worth the ride?

Josh Beckett, will pitch tonight after having his start pushed back one day so he could rest.  In his last outing Beckett, was limited to 92 pitches against the Baltimore Orioles.  This after tossing 125 pitches in his previous start against these same Los Angeles Angels he squares off against tonight.  The Red Sox are saying that they don’t see anything physically wrong with Beckett, he was just showing signs of fatigue.  I don’t know about you but, it is only May and he is already fatigued?  That worrisome to say the least.  Why did Terry Francona keep him out there so long in his last 4 starts?  Was it his lack of confidence in the bullpen or was Beckett, telling him that he wanted to stay out there?  Either way, lets hope that this was a one day minor setback and not something that will linger on all year.

Rob Dibble of MLBnetworkradio always says “A pitcher doesn’t show any signs of fatigue the day after he pitches, it may show up the next week, the next month and maybe even the next year.”  I have enjoyed Beckett’s return to dominance so far, I can’t bear the thought of him running out of gas so early in the season.

This team needs a strong Beckett to compete and we will find out soon enough just how strong he is.  It’s not like Beckett hasn’t been injury prone throughout his career.  Keep your fingers and toes crossed tonight as he takes to the hill.
