The Minor League Player of the Week Is….

Nate Spears; an everyday (insert any position here) is a rising prospect in the Boston system. Fans of the Portland Sea Dogs last year call him the best player on the infield. Fans on the outside of the Maine Monsters hardly know the name at all. With his considerably high average and his consistent walk rate, he is sure to be one of the best players on the field. The question is, where does Nate Spears fit in?

I’m not sure, the Red Sox even know. Placing him at 3B, 2B and Left Field in the Spring Games so far only proves this point further. On a typical day, you’d find Spears at Second Base or Shortstop. From what I’ve seen, he’s a much better second basemen. The future does not show Spears being a shortstop, with Marco Scutaro and Jed Lowrie now covering shortstop and Jose Iglesias on deck there is not much room. Second Base is covered by Dustin Pedroia and as far as Third Base and Left Field go, these are not everyday positions for Spears. In fact, I don’t recall him playing any games in 2010 at these positions. Although, with a chance to play, Spears jumps right to it. You could not find many players with this attitude and ability.

Through these past few days, Nate Spears has played in 6 games with 11 at bats. One Rbi, one walk and one stolen base. These are not the most amazing numbers, they are impressive for a Double A Second Basemen who is underestimated everyday. Ending this week, Spears had a total of four hits. I would expect to see much more from Spears next week. You should expect to see, more versatility, more hits, more stolen bases and more walks. This nomination is not only suppose to highlight what this player has done but what he will be doing in the future.

On a side note:

This is a weekly posting. I will take the numbers and the progress of the Minor League Players that have participated in Spring Training that week, and will come up with (in my opinion) the best player on field.
