As you may have noticed (or maybe not), I have been M.I.A. over the past few weeks. My life got completely insane in preparation for my wedding and then honeymoon. I neglected you, but for good reason and am now returning refreshed and ready to go. I want to send out a HUGE thank you to Justin Klugh of That Balls Outta Here and Call to the Pen and Wally Fish of Kings of Kaufman and Call to the Pen for filling in for me while I was out. They both are excellent writers and I highly recommend you check out both their blogs. On a Red Sox note, apparently my vacation was a great omen, because the team went from dead in the water and on the edge of the waterfall to breathing down the neck of the New York Yankees.
While away in Bermuda on my honeymoon, I tried my hardest to not sneak a peek at sports scores and see how the Sox were doing. I decided a break from the stress of the 2010 season was healthy, but quickly realized I didn’t have that kind of will-power. About half-way through the trip, I turned on ESPN and tried to get a gauge on how the team was doing based on the bottom line scores and information. I noticed the Sox seemed to be winning some ball-games, but had no idea about the AL East standings or how the Rays, Yankees and Blue Jays were fairing.
After getting the sports bug back, it was all over for me. With the lack of internet or phone service, I continued to turn on ESPN whenever possible until I was finally able to see the Sox impressive recent stretch and how close the division had gotten. Many, including myself, were on the ledge and close to jumping off 3 weeks ago and were ready to write off 2010 and look toward 2011. To see the Sox creep back within 4 or 5 games of the AL East lead and just 2 games out of a playoff spot at the beginning of June was a huge boost towards the end of the vacation and made me primed and ready to begin living and breathing the Sox back in the U.S.
Thank you all for allowing me the time to rest, relax and celebrate with my new bride. Sometimes the baseball season can be long and arduous, especially when you are writing daily, so a small break can be just what the doctor ordered for me to regain the pep I had in Spring Training. In addition to my usual content, I have a special series for everyone I will be launching this week that will feature clips of movies, commercials and shows that either reference baseball in some way or are classic baseball movies. It should be fun and I welcome suggestions.
For those dying for more serious Sox content, don’t worry. I am going to jump back this week and will give you the most up-to-date Red Sox news and commentary. Keep an eye out for the return of my Red Sox Notes column on Fridays and my thoughts on the Red Sox draft that began Monday evening, as well as the introduction of a few new serie’s and columns to satisfy all reader’s interests. With the Sox sitting 4.5 back and 2.5 behind the Yankees, let the playoff surge begin…
