A few days after passing a kidney stone, Mike Cameron returned to Mass General Hospital with abdominal pain. After some examination, it appears the Red Sox will be without Cameron’s services for a while due to a sports hernia (abdominal tear). As of now, Cameron is expected to have surgery and be out at least a month, if not closer to 6 weeks minimum. Don’t expect Cameron to be full speed for quite a while after that point, potentially not until the All-Star break.
This is a huge hit for the injury-laden Sox outfield, but will allow for the call-up of young sensation Josh Reddick. The Sox need a spark from somewhere, so to mix up the roster a bit is positive in my mind. Reddick will probably play everyday until Jacoby Ellsbury comes back, and then will likely split time with Jeremy Hermida. Having Reddick on the bench prevents the Sox from having to use Bill Hall in the outfield, which is music to the ears of Red Sox fans, who have watched Hall struggle over the past few days.
Reddick made his major league debut last season with the Red Sox, playing in 27 total games on a few separate stints. Reddick started off hot, but cooled down quickly with the several back and forth trips to AAA Pawtucket. According to SoxProspects.com, Reddick is the #2 overall prospect in the Sox minor league system and is a naturally gifted hitter. Last year, Reddick hit 2 HRs and drove in 4 RBIs in his limited playing time, but also struggled with his patience at the plate, striking out 17 times.
Reddick’s speed and energy with hopefully energize the dull and boring Sox lineup and will give him an opportunity to prove himself over a more extended period of time. I wish Mike Cameron a speedy recovery, but an excited to see a new face in the Sox clubhouse after the horrid 4-9 start. There is no word if Reddick will be in Boston for tonight’s game, but I assume the Sox are trying their best to avoid starting Hall in center field again.
