Superbowl is a Sign of Spring

Around New Orleans, Indianapolis and Miami, tomorrow’s game will be the focus of the entire sports year. For others around the country, the Superbowl indicates a a mecca of sports action at the highest level and a great excuse to have a dozen of your closest friends over for wings, chili, chips and beer. I, however, look at the Superbowl in a different light.

The Superbowl is an indicator that Winter is melting away, and Spring Training is just around the corner. Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of professional football, but nothing begins to approach baseball season. The thrill of dozens of players basking in the warm Florida sun fighting for the remaining roster spots is unlike any other sport. Sure, almost all professional sports have a ‘pre-season’ or ‘training camp’, but none get the same attention as baseball’s Spring Training, especially in Boston.

Spring also represents all the hopes and excitement of the long summer season ahead of us. No sport has a longer regular season, and because of that, every fan thinks their team has a shot at winning it all, with the exception of a few hopeless teams. A lot can happen in 162 games, and a preseason contender can plummet into a last place team and a last place team can make an improbable run. Unlike football, every game isn’t a make or break moment for a club, but rather a stepping stone on a path to success or failure. One or two mistakes will rarely effect the ultimate outcome of a season.

As I sit in front of my beautiful LCD TV tomorrow watching the Superbowl in HD, I will be surrounded by friends, eating and cheering, but will secretly be wishing for the game to be over, so 100% of my attention can be placed on the upcoming Truck Day and 6 days later when pitchers and catchers report to Fort Myers. No offense to the Saints or Colts, but the Sox have my heart and always will. I can hear Remy and Orsillo clearing their throats and getting ready for an 8+ month soap opera unlike any other in sports. Fort Myers, here we come.
