How Many Molina Catchers are there?

As you probably know by now, the Red Sox added a Molina to their roster on Friday. Even though he is a catcher, and his last name is Molina, he is not related to the 3 other Molina catchers. I don’t believe it for a second. Let’s investigate.

Bengie, Jose and Yadier Molina are brothers who just happen to all be major league catchers. They are similar in many ways, all having solid throwing arms, a lack of speed (to be polite) and all have earned World Series rings with different teams. Nothing terribly interesting there, except when envisioning a backyard game of wiffleball at the Molina household.

Then Gustavo Molina comes in, signs a minor league deal with the Sox and claims not to be related to the other three. Being a hard-hitting journalist, I went to my secret source for more information, Wikipedia, and discovered some differences.

The first major difference I discovered was that Gustavo is from Venezuela, and not Puerto Rico like Bengie, Jose and Yadier. Although that creates a major hole in my theory, I pushed on.

The second major difference I discovered is is that Gustavo was born in February of 1982, just 5 months before Yadier was born. I understand biologically it is difficult to have another baby 5 months after having one, but you never know.

Even though the evidence is pretty overwhelming, I am still not convinced that Gustavo isn’t a relative of trio. Just remember, that in 5 years when the ‘True Hollywood Story: The Molina’s Tell All’ airs and we find out Gustavo is related to the brothers, you heard it here first.
