Boneheaded Plays – “What Were They Thinking”!

Here’s a few of the boneheaded plays that happened across MLB on the first day of inter-league play this weekend.  These are the kind of plays that make you wonder “What were they thinking”!  Now these types of plays (or mistakes) happen on a pretty regular basis in the majors, but normally you never see this many in one day.  I came upon these three blunders and just had to pass them along to you.

Blunders from the baseball world on 06-12-09

  1. Boston Red Sox vs Philadelphia PhilliesWith the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 11th.  The Phillies pitch hitter Greg Dobbs is at the plate facing the Red Sox Justin Masterson, with two on, two outs and a 2-2 count.  Dobbs hit a ball so high and deep towards the foul pole in right-field, you can’t tell with the naked eye if it’s fair or foul.  Boneheaded Blunder – was on the part of the umpiring crew since they didn’t bother to review the play (it’s why we have instant replay now).  The Victims – Were the Phillies as they play if it was reviewed and overturned would have won the game for them.  Instead they lost 5-2, as the Red Sox scored 3 runs in the top of the 13th.  I’m a Sox fan so who am I to complain about this boneheaded blunder on the part of the umpires!
  2. Minnesota Twins vs Chicago Cubs – With the game in the 8th and the Twins leading 5-3, Joe Mauer is at the plate (runners on 1st and 3rd) and hits a fly ball to right-field where Milton Bradley makes the routine catch.  Boneheaded Blunder– comes when Bradley in the midst of showboating forgets how many outs there are and tosses the ball into the stands (nice souvenir for a fan).  To bad for Bradley and the Cubs, that was only the second out.  The play easily allows the Twins to tack on another run.  **You have to watch the video of the play and specifically the fans reaction behind the dugout (he’s wearing an old style Cubbies shirt) it’s truly a classic fan moment.
  3. New York Mets vs New York Yankees The Mets are one out away from taking the first game vs the Yankees in the Bronx.  Leading 8-7 with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, their closer Francisco Rodriguez facing Alex Rodriguez with two runners on base (1st and 2nd) gets A-Rod to pop up.  Easy that’s the ball game, right?  Boneheaded Blunder– this belongs to the Mets second baseman Luis Castillo who roamed into short right-field to make the final out .  Well Castillo tried to make the catch with a fancy one handed grab.  To bad for him and the Mets, the ball popped out of his glove and the Yanks win 9-8.  Mark Teixeira who was hustling the entire time easily scored from 1st base with the winning run, right behind Derek Jeter.  Thats precisely the reason why you are always taught to catch a ball with two hands.  One hand to catch it, the other to cover and close the glove so the ball doesn’t come out.  I’ve coached little leaguers for many years and that’s one of the first things that we always cover and continually go over, so that would one thing never happens.
