Star Shining Bright!

What a night at Fenway Park, not only for the Boston Red Sox, their fans but more importantly for one David Ortiz.  As Big Papi finally went yard for the first time in the 2009 campaign, ending a 149 at bat homer-less streak.  On a 3-1 pitch in the bottom of the fifth Ortiz drilled a shot to deep center that just barely cleared the center-field wall for his first round tripper on the year.  After touching home, Ortiz trotted into the dugout and the Sox being their normal selves all played it calm and cool as they gave Ortiz the silent treatment.  Which lasted for maybe five seconds before Dustin Pedroia lead the way for his teammates in mobbing Big Papi.

Ortiz wasn’t the only Sox star shining bright on the night.  Especially during the fifth inning as Jason Varitek the captain of the club added his second home run on the evening in the fifth.  It’s Varitek’s first multi-homer game since August 2005.  Jason Bay hit a ball so deep and high over the Green Monster.  That I’m still not sure it’s come back to earth and landed yet.  And finally not looking to be left out was Mike Lowell who connected for his seventh home run which gave Boston back to back HR’s, only seconds after Bay’s shot.

The night also marked the return of Kevin Youkilis from the disabled list.  Youkilis who had spent the last 15 days on the DL with a left oblique strain returned to his torrid hitting going 3-5, and raised his average to .404 on the season.  In other injury news Mark Kotsay, who’s been dealing with back surgery and an injured calf muscle is a day or so away from starting his rehab.  Kotsay could be joining the Pawtucket Red Sox for a weekend series at McCoy Stadium, to test out his playing ability on a daily basis.  I for one can truly say that I’ve missed Kotsay especially when Youk was on the DL.  As I’m just not a huge fan of Jeff Bailey who was filling in during Youk’s absence.
