In Need Of Wins Tonight!

Could the Boston teams actually pull off another Trifecta?  They just might and if they’re able to do so, it would be for the third time this week.  If you know horse racing then you’re familiar with the term trifecta, if not I’ll tell you.  A trifecta is a bet placed on three horses to cross the finish line in the exact order they are chosen.  When this happens the payday can and will be huge for you, but I’m not referring to horse racing, just using it as an analogy.

I’m actually referring a sports trifecta, which is what happens when one city has three teams all gaining victories in the same day.  The city for this trifecta involves Boston, which has the Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins all still in action and once again desperately in need of wins tonight!  All three are playing today with the C’s and B’s fighting for their lives and their seasons.  With the Celtics and Bruins each in the midst of their postseasons, the Celtics are facing a game 6 tonight in Orlando in the NBA play-offs.  And the Bruins are facing a do or die winner takes all game 7 at Boston in their NHL play-offs.

Plus the Red Sox are doing some fighting of their own early into their season, as they are trying to regain first place in the AL East.  With just about a quarter of the season history the Sox currently find themselves in second place behind the Toronto Blue Jays.  But then with close too 120 games left to be played in baseball, time is not of the essence for the Sox.  Especially when they still have to play the Jays eighteen times as both clubs haven’t faced each other on the year.

Now let’s get back to the trifecta and how the Boston teams accomplished them twice already this week:

Trifecta 1 – Sunday May 10th, 2009

  1. Bruins win 4-0 over Carolina Hurricanes
  2. Celtics win 95-94 over Orlando Magic
  3. Red Sox win 4-3 over Tampa Bay Rays

Trifecta 2 – Tuesday May 12th, 2009

Bruins win 4-2 over Hurricanes

 Celtics win 92-88 over Magic

Red Sox win 4-3 over Los Angeles Angels

This would be huge if they were able to capture another trifecta as it would propel both the Celtics and the Bruins into the semi-finals of their playoffs, plus make it three trifecta’s over the span of five days.  As a win for the Sox would give them the series (2-1) over the Angels.  Will it happen?  No one knows yet, but it gets underway when the Sox face the Angels in an early afternoon matinee in LA.  Then it’s on to the C’s and the B’s wrapping up the action later this evening, and quite possibly another perfect sports trifecta for the beloved city of Boston and their fans!
