Here are a few of Mother’s Day activities that will be going on in and around Fenway Park. Of course let’s not forget all the day’s festivities will be capped off with the Boston Red Sox hosting the Tampa Bay Rays in the final game of their three game series tonight.
List of Mother’s Day activities:
Mother’s Day Walk in the Park:The Walk in the Park presented by Red Sox Banking only at Bank of America, will take place on Sunday, May 10 from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. This free-of-cost event gives fans an opportunity to bring their mothers to the ballpark and take a leisurely stroll on the warning track at America’s Most Beloved Ballpark. Fans can have their photos taken with the 2004 and 2007 World Series Trophies and Wally the Green Monster. Red Sox Alumni Luis Tiant and Frank Malzone will also be present for autographs and photos. Fans can enter the ballpark at Gate C.
Gate Giveaway: Bank of America, the official bank of the Boston Red Sox, will partner with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to distribute flyers to all fans at the gates before the Sunday game. The flyers contain information that encourages early detection and urges all Red Sox fans to get involved in raising breast cancer awareness and funds. Bank of America has also introduced new Komen themed Debit Cards, Credit Cards and checks, all of which generate funds to help find a cure for breast cancer.
Player Participation:Red Sox players will join MLB players throughout the league on Sunday in sporting a pink ribbon on their home white uniforms to help raise breast cancer awareness. Various players will also use pink wristbands and players who use Louisville Slugger bats will also be using customized pink bats stamped with the MLB breast cancer logo for a portion of the game. Captain Jason Varitek will wear pink catcher’s gear, which will be auctioned off at a later date to raise money for Komen, as will all pink bats used during the game. Dugout lineup cards will also be pink.
Honorary Bat Girl: Dorothy Mucciarone from Walpole, MA was chosen by Major League Baseball as the club’s Honorary Bat Girl for the game, and she will be honored during pre-game ceremonies. Dorothy was selected as part of an initiative to recognize incredible baseball fans who have “Gone to Bat Against Breast Cancer” in their daily lives. MLB chose one exceptional individual for each of the 30 teams. Dorothy was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2006, and she chose to undergo a mastectomy and subsequent chemotherapy. She completed chemotherapy in February 2007, eventually beating the disease and is now cancer free. She and her sister both fought the disease but, tragically, her sister Peggy lost her battle in 2008. During these very difficult times Dorothy drew inspiration from watching Red Sox players who conquered cancer, and she said they showed her that “cancer can be just a speed bump on the road of life, and life can be brighter and happier on the other side of cancer.”
Other Pre-Game and In-Game Activities:50 breast cancer patients and survivors will make up a “pink zone” at Fenway Park on Sunday. The Red Sox donated 50 game tickets to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, who invited these brave women and men to the game. The group, which will be outfitted in special pink t-shirts, will also be recognized on the field during the pre-game ceremonies. Two of these individuals will also be selected to deliver the Ceremonial First Pitch and say ‘Play Ball’ before the game. Additionally, breast cancer survivor Linda Sue Sohn will be performing the National Anthem and God Bless America.
A Komen-produced awareness video and important facts regarding the disease will run on the scoreboard throughout the game. “Happy Mother’s Day” messages taped by Red Sox players will also be played on the centerfield videoboard during the game.
Tonight’s game will be shown nationally on ESPN, as the Sunday night game of the week. Which is great news for Red Sox fans across the country who love being able to see their favorite team in action. The Rays will be sending Matt Garza (3-2) to face-off with Josh Beckett (3-2) in tonight’s finale. The Rays now have a 6-3 edge over the Sox on the season going into tonight.
