OH MY GOD! SOX WIN WITH WALK OFF IN 11TH! Did you just see that finish? I did thanks to the MLB Network, on DirecTV, now that’s how you want to start the season series. With a bang and the little thing called “the long ball” and that’s just what the Boston Red Sox did as they knocked off the New York Yankees, 5-4.
And it’s all due to Kevin Youkilis and his walk off home run in the bottom of the eleventh. Now Youkilis or Youk, as he’s called in Boston, wouldn’t of been the hero if it wasn’t for the heroics of Jason Bay earlier in the game. With the Yankees leading 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth, and Mariano Rivera, on the mound, Youk lined a single to center-field which set the stage for Bay. And did Bay ever deliver, we’re talking BIG TIME, as he sent an offering from Rivera deep into the center-field net that tied the contest up at 4-4.
This game was another classic battle with these two teams, as it went back and forthwith each having their own chances to break it open. The Sox had another solid outing from Jon Lester, as he went six innings and only allowed 2 runs on 7 hits. With the game tied 2-2 in the seventh, the Yankees got to reliever Hideki Okijima, for 2 runs as they retook the lead at 4-2 and quickly sent him to the showers. A short time later it was Bay’s time to shine with his 4th homer on the year, and then Youkilis sent a very happy and enthusiastic Fenwaycrowd home with a Sox victory.
Just a quick note on Rivera, the game’s greatest closer of all time has now blown his 12th career save opportunity vs the Red Sox. Tonight’s blown save was a great way to start the series, but it’s not the most memorable one of Rivera’s “chokes”, that one still and always will be game 4 of the ALCS in 2004! The scorecard for the moment reads GOOD 1 – EVIL 0, until the next time, enjoy this victory!
