Twinkies Are Welcomed Back At Fenway, ANYTIME!

I know all the die-hard followers and fans of Boston Red Sox, not only loved the club’s performance yesterday vs the Minnesota Twins.  They’d even go along and agree with me when I say the Twinkies are welcomed back at Fenway, ANYTIME!  Especially when the lay down and play dead, as the Twins did, in losing both games of the day and night double-header with the Sox.  Boston who not only spanked the Twins in game one with their 10-1 victory in a seven inning rain shortened victory.  They came back a few hours later after rain delayed the start of game two, and did it all over again, this time winning 7-3.

Starting pitchers Tim Wakefield, who’s now 2-1 on the year, opened things up with another great pitching performance for the club.  Wakefield, was provided with plenty of run support as the Sox jumped all over the Twins starter Scott Baker(0-2) early for six runs.  It was all about the long ball as the Sox had homeruns from Kevin Youkilis, Nick Green (above)and Mike Lowell all within the first three inning’s.  Even better news was that all three of trio’s blasts came with runners on base.  Those runs would be the only one’s needed as the Sox cruised to an an early lead and never looked back.

And then it was time for good ole mother nature to make her feelings felt about the day’s activities.  As her rain delayed the action for about 85 minutes, in the seventh inning.  The Sox who had already tacked on four more runs before the rain stopped the action had a very comfortable 10-1 lead at that point.  The game was finally called and made official after the long delay, and it was then time to hit the showers and get some rest for the players, before they played the night game.

Game two’s starter Brad Penny, wasn’t about to be outdone by Wakefield’s performance, as Penny pitched six innings to pick up his second victory on the season.  Again the Sox hitters came out early and gave their pitcher plenty of run support, as they received clutch hitting from Jeff Bailey.  Bailey, who was just called up to the big league’s showed the club and it’s fans why he’s ready for prime-time, as he went 1 for 2, with three RBI’s, in his season debut.

After Penny’s departure from the game the Sox and their bullpen came on to pitch three innings of shut-out relief.  Along the way the Sox relievers combined to keep the Twins at bay and hit-less.  As Ramon Ramirez, Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon continued the pitching dominance the Twins, had faced all day and evening.  Which was some much needed work for them as they dealt with the previous day’s rain out and Wakefield’s complete game performance earlier in the day.  They needed the work, even if it’s only an inning it helps allow them to get into the game action and helps keep them fresh and ready for the next time they’re called upon.

So too recap the day’s events, the Sox WIN two from the Twins.  While continuing their winning ways and keeping the offense and their pitching firing on all cylinders.  The Red Sox, pounded the Twins for 19 hits and 17 runs, and did all this while enduring rain delays that totaled over two hours.  They’re now on a season high seven game winning streak and playing their best ball on the year.  Which is great for the team as they prepare for their three game weekend showdown with their AL East, and arch rivals, the New York Yankees.
