In Massachusetts, every April on the third Monday of the month, two of the greatest sports traditions are brought together on one very special day. For those of you that are familiar with this day and those who are not it’s called Patriots’ Day! Patriots’ Day which is a civil holiday, is held in observance of the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, which were the first battles in the American Revolutionary War. It’s also special for bringing two of the pre-mentioned greatest sporting traditions to center stage for all the world to see.
What are they? They’re the Boston Marathon, and the Boston Red Sox! It’s been that way since 1959 when Major League Baseball, first started scheduling the Red Sox to play at home in Fenway Park, on Patriots’ Day. And the tradition continues once again today, as it’s time for the 113th running of the Boston Marathon, which is the world’s oldest annual marathon. The marathon which this year has an estimated 26,384 participants is scheduled to get underway shortly after 9 am. Professional runners and thousands of amateur’s will try for the ultimate goal, winning it and being crowned champion.
For the Sox and the Baltimore Orioles, their first pitch will take place at roughly 11:05 am, which the game’s normal start time. Why so early you might be asking yourself? It helps allow fans of both baseball and the marathon a chance to see the winners and or most of the participants as they get closer to the finish line near Kenmore Square and Yawkey Way.
Before I end this I’d like to take a moment and offer my “best wishes” and a “best of luck” to all the individuals who are participating in the marathon. Plus those who are involved in the planning, the running, set-up, the control and anyone else that will assist it any way, I offer you the same thought. As a sports lover who was born and raised in Massachusetts, I can truly say with all my heart there’s not a better “pair” of sporting events taking place on the same day as these two.
Good Luck to All – Let’s Go Red Sox!
