Does anyone see the pattern that’s been developing so far for the Boston Red Sox this season? No, you don’t then here it is, they like to win one game, then lose the next in a row. I’m serious about this so if you don’t believe me then check out their game results for the year t this point. When you check you’ll notice they beat the Tampa Bay Rays on opening day, then lost the next three games to the Rays and the LA Angels.
Then they lucked out and beat the Angels on Saturday, thanks to the play of Jason Bay and the pitching of Brad Penny. Then it begins all over again, they lost the “rubber” game to the Angels, plus their next two games vs the Oakland Athletics. So there’s another losing streak of three. Before they finished their six game road trip with a victory this afternoon over in the finale of the Oakland series.
Now I’m not a genius in the field of math, but if you wanna be playing ball in October, this whole win one then lose three deal, needs to cease and quickly! Especially once they come back home to the friendly confines of Fenway Park and open up a nine game homestand. Since two out of the next three (see there it is again) opponents for the Sox are from within the AL East. Plus with the Baltimore Orioles, and the hated New York Yankees, making their first trips to Boston this year winning once every four games will kill you. As you’ll find yourself in the cellar looking up at the entire division, wondering what went wrong.
For the Sox they just need to combine all aspects involved in the game at the same time. That means hitting, defense, starting pitching and most importantly the relief (bullpen) pitching all need to “magically” work as a unit, in order to win. Now, I’m not saying those things haven’t happened for the Sox this year, they have, but not all in the same game. Take their victory vs the Angels last Saturday, they got the starting pitching (thanks Penny), they had the offense (thanks to Bay and Mike Lowell). But their closer Jonathan Papelbon, struggled and came dam close to blowing it in the end.
That’s been the Sox all season long, one or two seem to show-up to play, but it’s that one missing piece that seems to doom the Sox and keep them from winning. Besides with the team the Sox have and put on the field on a daily basis, we the people in Boston and their fans all over the world expect perfection. LOL, maybe not perfection, but it better be darn close to it as possible. The great news for the Sox and their fans, it’s still very, very early into the 2009 MLB season. Which means things can and they will change quickly, either in a positive or negative way.
We’ve done the negitive thing for the majority of this season, it can only get better from here. Right? God I hope so, it will be truly a long season and summer if they don’t change things around and start playing to their full potential. So to wrap things up, the Sox beat the A’s 8-2! Ending their road-trip with a 2-4 record, thanks to a master piece of a game thrown by veteran Tim Wakefield this afternoon.
