Talk about a very nerve racking ending to this afternoon’s game between the Boston Red Sox and the LA Angels. They needed a little of this and a little of that on both sides of field this afternoon as Boston held on for a 5-4 victory. On the defensive side they needed and got a nice debut from Brad Penny as he gave up three runs over six strong innings along the way to his first victory in a Sox uniform. And Sox fans can also congratulate 3B Mike Lowell for his stellar play in the field, as he snagged and knocked down any ball the Angels hitters sent his way.
Not to be outdone was the sensational play made by the Sox left-fielder Jason Bay, off the bat of Torii Hunter. With the Angels up by a 2-0 score in the bottom of the fourth, lead-off hitter Hunter drove a ball deep into left-field that Bay, made a spectacular play for one getting to the ball and two hauling it in. The only question about that play was once Bay got his glove on the ball and it popped out, did it hit the wall on it’s way down towards the ground.Â
Countless re-plays were inconclusive on whether or not the ball actually made contact with the wall or just Bay’s glove. If you ask me, he made the catch and made it cleanly, so that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
From an offensive side the Sox, made the most out of their chances as they used the long-ball the entire afternoon to score their runs. As three of their eight hits went deep into the stands in left-field. Lowell started the scoring for Boston with his two-run shot in the fifth, for his first home-run on the season. Then it was Bay’s time to shine as he launched two rockets of his own into the same area in the seventh and then again in the ninth with a solo blast.
As it turned out the Sox needed that extra insurance run off the bat of Bay as the normally lights-out Jonathan Papelbon was far from perfect in getting his second save on the season. Papelbon looked great as he got Vladimir Guerrero, to fly-out on three pitches to end the eight. But he ran into trouble to start the ninth as he gave up a solo home-run to Hunter to which closed the gap to 5-4 with no outs. The Angels loaded the bases before Papelbon was finally able to get Howard Kendrick , to fly out deep to right for the final out.end the game.
The Sox heroes on this day were Penny, Lowell and Jason Bay as they all contributed in this much needed victory. So the question that’s been on the minds of Red Sox fans since spring training began seven weeks ago, has just been answered. What’s a Penny actually worth these days? ……. it’s worth a Sox victory!
