I’d like to take a moment and express my deepest sympathy to the family, friends and teammates of the Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart! Who at age 22, was killed in a drunk driving accident early Thursday morning, a few hours after leaving his first big league start of the season in Anaheim. Also killed in the accident was 25 year old Henry Nigel Pearson, and 20 year old Courtney Frances Stewart. A fourth person in the same vehicle 24 year old Jon Wilhite is in critical condition at the UC Irvine Medical Center, early reports are “very positive” as a hospital spokesman stated Wilhite is expected to survive.
On Wednesday night in front of a sold out crowd in Anaheim, with his father watching in the stands he left the mound on top of the world. After pitching a brilliant game and giving his team the Angels six scoreless innings plus a 4-0 lead over the Oakland Athletics. Only to have his life cut short by a suspected drunk driver hours later. Adenhart will forever be an “Angel” in the eyes and minds of his family, teammates, their fans and organization!
Unfortunately this is not an uncommon occurrence in America these days, as just about every day either through the news or the Internet we’re hearing and seeing this type of tragic news. The difference in this case is the story has hit the “national media” level since Adenhart, was just entering the prime of his life and coming into his own as a major league ballplayer. Maybe our so called “for the people” lawmakers and elected officials will FINALLY take a tougher stand and invoke laws that are stiffer and harsher, especially in cases that involve drunk driving.
