The Red Sox placed Felix Doubront on the 15-day DL today with a left shoulder strain. Stephen Drew was activated and takes the spot on the 25-man roster vacated by Doubront.

Doubront left last night’s game against the Blue Jays with what was described as shoulder fatigue, after allowing five earned runs through four innings. After two consecutive promising starts, Doubront looked off all night, missing his spots with decreased velocity. The move means the Red Sox will need a starting pitcher outside their regular five-man rotation for the first time this season. Some of the candidates are discussed here.

As for Drew, according to the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo, Drew will be activated tonight but will start a minor league assignment on Friday. This clears the way for the Sox to call up one of their minor league pitchers to make a start on Sunday against the Rays.
