SPEEDSTER, PLAYS ALL THREE OF POSITIONS…STOLEN BASE ACE…

PRICE TAG:  1 year, $2.5 million, OR 2 YEARS $5 million.

Since the start of 2009, the first season he got more than 300 at-bats, he has stolen 216 bases–second only to Michael Bourn [239], who did it with 1,000 more plate appearances. As far as the speed goes, no free agent is a bigger asset.

Although only a .268/.316/.377 career hitter, he has averaged 403 at-bats per season over the past five years.

If Ellsbury leaves, he would be a dynamic speed threat atop the order.

Leadoff hitter, PH, Pinch-runner, 4th OF, can play all fields.

Crain is the only guy I saw mentioned that 1. I would want and 2. that I could see the Red Sox having interest in. My problem with Ben is he waits so long that every other team and his brother sign everyone. Do your homework, then make a flippin decision and get it done! Its maddening how long he makes fans wait before signing a player.

    • John Fahrer

Baker would be a decent get too. But as of now they’d probably prefer a guy who can play a little at SS and bat from the left side (would love Furcal as a reserve). But say they were to re-sign Drew and package Middkebrooks as part of a deal for Stanton, then I could see Baker as a potential fit.

Cherington’s just waiting for things to play out right now an I’d expect it to pick up within the next week or two. The news that they’ve told at least one of their FAs that they are going to also shop for potential replacements is a sign of things heating up.

  • John Fahrer

Can’t view Rajai Davis as a top of the order threat with that atrocious OBP. More like a number 9 hitter with good speed. If Ellsbury walks, the job will very likely be Bradley’s.
