Go Sox! A Sports Writer Remembers What It’s Like To Be A Fan.

I’ve been distracted this week. My real life job has me by the short hairs. I’m paid well to deliver solutions to big problems for my company. I get it. It’s a contractual relationship that allows me to do what I’m good at it while putting my daughter through college. All is fair.

Still and all, at my core I’m a Red Sox fan. My latest distraction – Microsoft’s Tech Ed conference in New Orleans – has been a spectacular event. It has allowed me to become, at least for a week, a casual yet impassioned fan while my BSI staff kicks ass and takes names. Today was a perfect case in point.

I spent my day getting my head stuffed with more technology than I could stand. My last session ended at 6:15. I was perfectly positioned in the French Quarter only a 15 minute walk from my fellow compadre geeks 0n Bourbon Street.

Smartphones and iPads are a beautiful thing. I hit my room after a one mile walk from the convention center and tapped into my MLB app on my iPhone. The Sox were in the middle of putting the hurt on the Teas Rangers at Fenway. Ultimately, a giddy 17-5 humiliation of the Rangers was what transpired. I was a fan casually checking in and reveling in a big time win that featured the continuing ascendance of Jose Iglesias (2 for 5, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI, .431) and the continuing excellence of David Ortiz (2 for 6, 3 RBI, .333).

I spent quality time with colleagues, cruised Bourbon Street, ate spectacular food and ended up, predictably, at the House of Blues, all the while following the Red Sox on my phone. My night was infinitely better because they won, which allowed me to hurl some massive crap at my Ranger friends. Life could not get any better.

Go Sox!  Great win. I love being a Red Sox fan.
