Red Sox Officially Open Camp As Pitchers And Catchers Report

Truck Day led us towards some excitement for the season last week, but yesterday was the official start of major league camp. Pitchers and catchers reported yesterday, and already there are pictures of a few new acquisitions in Red Sox uniforms. However, just because this was the official start to camp doesn’t mean too much for the Red Sox as several pitchers and catchers (notably every member of the pitching rotation and Jarrod Saltalamacchia) reported early and a few position players (Dustin Pedroia, Mike Napoli, Will Middlebrooks, and top prospects Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr.) are in camp now.

It’s still nine days until the start of exhibition games, but that doesn’t mean that pitchers and catchers reporting isn’t a momentous occasion. There is now consistent news about the Red Sox including picture and video of the boys in their new uniforms. Plus, there will be even more consistent news starting Thursday when position players report to Ft. Myers.

There’s a ton of optimism around camp judging from player interviews, and everybody seems to like the new team. It’s certainly a change from last year, as the Red Sox made nine major league acquisitions this winter. However, almost all those guys appear to be good clubhouse guys and are gelling together well. I’m excited to continue seeing little bits of news until position players officially report on Thursday.
