Red Sox Nation Frustrated, Need a Reminder

Think this titles a little drastic? Tune your radio to WEEI at some point today and have a listen to the endless calls from disgruntled fans. You’ll see very quickly that this article is right on-Red Sox Nation is definitely in shambles these days.

Listening in to Mut & Merloni’s daily radio show yesterday I heard everything from Josh Beckett needs to be traded for draft picks (not sure how that’s possible) to Mark Melancon being second on one fans list of Red Sox who “disrespect the fans”–after just two appearances with the Red Sox.

The panic, frustration, anger and disappointment were evident in 4 out of 5 of the phone calls made to the show. One guy suggested that the Red Sox–Second largest payroll in ’12–were running their business the wrong way and another caller proclaimed that he was “finally done” with this team.

No doubt consecutive 0-3 starts plays big into the frustration of Red Sox Nation but is it warranted? I’m not so sure.

The impression I got from the majority of callers was they blame the players for “not caring”. This is a notion I don’t necessarily agree with. Are there members of the Red Sox with bad attitudes? Yes. Is that the reason the Red Sox started 0-3 and went 7-20 in September last season? Not likely.

Any casual fan with a level head can see why the Red Sox aren’t winning games–their pitching isn’t good enough. Last nights game in Toronto should have made that their clear, If it was ever foggy to begin with. The Red Sox got solid pitching from Felix Doubront, Scott Atchison and Alfredo Aceves, guess what? They came back in the ninth and beat the Blue Jays. Would they have had that chance if Doubront had given up 4? Or if Atchison came in and gave up a few? Probably not.

My point is, there’s no need to panic after just 3 games. September surely wore on the patience of Red Sox fans but this is a new year and we need to get back to the unwavering passion that we had before 2011.
