I Won’t be Attending the Jose Iglesias Coming Out Party

It appears Marco Scutaro is heading for the disabled list, which opens the door for the “shortstop of the future” coming out party to start as early as today.  Notice the emphasis on “future?”  To me, the last thing this team needs is another weak hitting position player in the lineup.

Jose Iglesias‘ early claim to fame seems to be his outstanding defense.  This team is already strong defensively.  Correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t recall a game this year where we have lost on an error or defensive blunder.  As important as it is to prevent runs, this team is having a lot more problems scoring them.  We already have enough players batting under .250, do we really need another?

Say the inevitable happens and Iglesias is brought up to the big leagues, are we going to sit Jed Lowrie on the bench?  Do you want to replace Lowrie’s team leading .337 batting avg for the hopes of a diving play or two?  On the flip side, if he is brought up and only sits on the bench, how is that helping him improve?  He would be much better off staying in the minors and getting as many at bats as he can.  I view this as a lose/lose situation for everyone.

All this excitement for what?  To watch Iglesias pinch run for David Ortiz or Adrian Gonzalez late in a close game?  That’s the only situation I see the “Future” contributing for the next 15 days.  Iglesias’ day will come, I just think this isn’t the right time for him or this team.

So when I receive my invitation for the “coming out” party, I am going to politely check off: Will Not Be Attending.” at least not at this time.
