2004 World Series Trophy Missing

In an interesting twist of fate, the day before the Red Sox begin their quest for a championship in 2011, the most important artifact in the franchise’s history is missing. The coveted 2004 World Series trophy that symbolized the end of the Curse of the Bambino has gone missing from the Red Sox trophy case at Fenway Park. The glorious award has touched millions of hands since being handed to the team after their sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals and has been to every single town in Massachusetts to give fans the chance to take pictures and share the moment. Ironically, now that the trophy is in safe-keeping, it has mysteriously disappeared.

The biggest twist in this story involves another controversial figure when it comes to the possession of important artifacts. The one and only has been rumored to be involved with this surprising disappearance. The Red Sox front office was reportedly trying to get a search warrant for Mientkiewicz’s Ohio home, because he told some friends that he was still upset about the ball incident in 2005, when the Red Sox sued him over possession of the ball he caught to win the 2004 World Series. No one knows for sure if Mientkiewicz was involved, but he certainly seems like a prime target for the investigation.

No matter what happens, the Red Sox hope the trophy is still in good shape and can be returned to the display case for all to see. It is a true point of pride for the organization, because it symbolizes the start to a strong era of baseball for the Red Sox franchise, after 86 years of heart-break and devastation.  This is certainly not the story I wanted to post on opening day, when there is so much potential in the air for this squad. Oh, and by the way, April Fools.
