According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox, the Red Sox will call up first baseman Ryan Shealy from the Pawtucket Red Sox before tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays at the Trop. As of now, Kevin Youkilis is in the starting lineup, but the Red Sox want to be cautious in case his ankle gets worse and he is unable to play. There is no word yet on who Shealy will replace on the roster, but Terry Francona said earlier today on WEEI that Felix Doubront will remain with the major league club in case Clay Buchholz isn’t ready to make his first start after the all-star break.
Ryan Shealy was selected in the 11th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft and remained in the Colorado system making his major league debut in 2005 before being traded to Kansas City in 2006. The University of Florida grad has played in 164 major league games since 2005, hitting .271 with 19 home runs and 94 rbis. In his career, Shealy has 148 strike outs and 46 walks, but saw no major league action in 2009. Earlier this year, Shealy spent time in the Tampa Bay Rays system playing for the Durham Bulls. Since joining the Pawtucket Red Sox this season, Shealy has hit .246 with 2 home runs and 8 rbis in just 18 games.
Although nothing has been said, I would guess Niuman Romero would be the odd man out on the roster given his 0-4 day yesterday filling in for Kevin Youkilis.
