Rangers Sign Garko, Lowell Staying Put

This afternoon, the Texas Rangers search for an infielder ended with the signing of Ryan Garko. Normally, that would just be one of many roster moves for clubs this Spring, but this has a direct impact on a member of the Red Sox. The Rangers were in talks with the Sox about trading for Mike Lowell as soon as yesterday, but now it appears they are no longer in need of Lowell’s services, killing the deal.

Now, more than at any point this off-season, it seems that Mike Lowell will remain a member of the Red Sox for the foreseeable future. Considering the Sox were going to have to pay $9 or $10 million of Lowell’s $12 million deal to the Rangers (or any other club) anyway, it makes sense to keep Lowell on as a backup 1st, 3rd and DH. Despite being slowed by a knee bruise, Lowell has had a strong Spring, proving his worth to the team off the bench and as a spot starter.

This could also benefit Lowell in a few ways. If he can get some playing time and prove his health during the regular season, it will certainly raise his trade value and increase his 2011 contract (if he decides to keep playing). As much as Lowell would like to be a starter right now, by sitting back and being patient, he could earn more money and playing time in the future assuming he stays healthy. By keeping him around, it also helps the Sox in the club house, with Lowell’s veteran presence.

For now, we must all get used to the fact that Mike Lowell will be playing for the Red Sox and not shipped off to Texas for the second time. I sincerely hope Lowell has an excellent season in a backup role and is able to propel himself to success in the remaining few years of his career.
