Dear Adrian,

I understand there are a ton of rumors floating around and your agent is whispering sweet nothings into your ear about every possible trade, but you and I both know there is only one place for you to be playing next season: Boston. Besides being the greatest city in America, Boston offers you and your wife the most loyal fan-base in the country. As long as you are wearing the hanging socks on your jersey and give it 100% on the field, you will be embraced and supported here in every way possible. Who wouldn’t want to play in front of a sold-out crowd in the greatest park in Major League Baseball every single night?A trade to the Red Sox, Adrian, would automatically place you in the middle of a pennant race every single year, unlike your experience with San Diego. The American League East is, hands down, the best division in professional baseball and allows you to get national attention on a nightly basis.  The level of competition is unmatched, and you would be thrust into the premier rivalry in baseball. Each night you will be facing the league’s best pitchers with  chance to put your team over the top with a big hit, or strong defensive stop.

The greatest perk to being on the Boston Red Sox is the people. Beginning with one of the best managers in baseball, Tito will greet you with open arms and introduce you to what it means to wear the famed jersey. Besides Tito, the players will be your friends and family and will protect you with a talented lineup each night. Unlike San Diego, you will be one of many dangerous hitters the opposing pitcher needs to be careful pitching to, allowing you to see better pitches to hit.

Adrian, pick up your cell phone right now and call GM Jed Hoyer. Let him know that Boston is where your heart is and you would do anything to get there for the 2010 season. Why? Because it is the right thing to do.

See you soon,

B-Dogg

No argument here. A Gon would be an amazing addition, but Theo would never, no should he, give up Buchholz, Jacoby and a prospect. If the Sox struggle at the beginning of the season, he may be more willing to pull together a deal before the trade deadline.

I agree, losing Bay is a huge loss, I loved him. Ortiz has been very hot and cold and extremely questionable, but this is a contract year for him, so I have hope that he will step it up. I def. Don't think they are a shoe-in for a tittle, I was being a bit playful. But if we take Adrian we are losing a key factor in that amazing rotation, as well as an all-around outstanding Jacoby. I hope I am wrong and we can get him without losing those guys, that would be wonderful. But as it stands I'm anti-Agon, and def anti Beltre...

I mostly agree, except worry about the lack of another power hitter. Ortiz is a wildcard, because of his roller-coaster ride last season. Cameron will fill a hole, but is only a .250 hitter, despite the power numbers, and is not a spring chicken. Losing Bay's presence in the lineup, which was as important as his production, will hurt. Not many pitchers are afraid of Mike Cameron stepping in. I wouldn't go as far as to say they are a shoe-in for the world series title, but if the Sox pitching staff can perform at a high level and have a solid offense, it will be tough to beat them in a 5 or 7 game series.

Hey, I agree 100%, they are very different types of ball-players, and I wouldn't compare them if san diago weren't trying to trade for Jacoby... Actually last I heard it was buchholz, Jacoby, and a prospect. This is why I think Adrian is over-rated... if anyone thinks he's worth all of that they are CRAZY. realistically I don't know if we can have A-gon and Jacoby, but if we can get him without losing buch or ells then I am for it.

Here is the deal though, we need to stop spending this year, we got a great new pitcher, filled a hole in our outfield since jbay doesn't look like he's coming back (sadly), and we have enough options in our infield to seriously contend this year. Save our money and throw all if it at Joe Mauer next year. With him catching, VMart at first, little dusty holding down second, scut at SS, and youk at third + our untouchable pitching we will probably win every world series ever with that team.

Thanks Supahsoxfan, I always appreciate a good conversation and being challenged!
Remember though, I'm not condoning trading Jacoby, I'm simply showing that Gonzalez is one of the best hitters in the game. When you compare RBIs, you need to look at the overall team. Adrian's RBIs are dependent on hitters getting on base in front of him, and the Padres only hit .242 and had an on base percentage of .321 as a team last year. On a team like the Sox that hit .270 with an on base percentage of .352 last season, there is no doubt A Gon has a bunch more RBI opportunities, in the same vein that JAcoby would have had much few RBIs if her were playing in San Diego. Jacoby and Gonzalez are two very different types of players who hit at different points in the lineup, have different skill sets, and were on very different teams last season (leadoff speed/avg vs power/cleanup spot), so the comparisons can be difficult.

Sorry, type-o: Jacoby is a .298 and rising career hitter*

Ok, I'll take back "over-rated hitter" I didn't mean that, I meant as a player the sox should go after over-all. 289 isn't bad, but you have to look at who we would give up to get him. Jacoby is a .289 and rising career hitter. Last year AG had 99 RBIs to jacobys 125. HRs are fun to watch but not as important as over-all run production. Jacoby will be a star for a long time to come, and we should never trade him for, in my opinion, an over-rated declining Adrian gonzalez who would be in a whole new ballgame in Boston and who's nbers would without a doubt suffer due to a much more difficult division... (I don't want another lugo..)

I appreciate the quick reply though, we may not agree on A-gon, but I'm sure we agree on wanting the best for the sox, needless to say, I'm bookmarking your blog and look forward to more sox talk

Thanks for the comment Supahsoxfan! Check your facts...Gonzalez is a 26-year old, career .281 hitter, who has hit 30, 36, and 40 homeruns the last three years in a lineup that gave him no protection. He currently has the most affordable salary for a power hitter in baseball at at under 5 million for 2010 and with a club option of 5.5 million through 2011. He is one of the most consistent everyday players who has played in 161, 162, and 160 games in each of the last 3 seasons. Now I don't agree with trading Buchholz and Jacoby, but an over-rated hitter? Not even close.

What?! More like:
dear Adrian, you are over-rated and only look good because you play in sandiago. You're a .270 hitter, and we don't need you in our infield unless you know a really good shortstop. You are not worth losing buchholz OR Jacoby, let alone BOTH of them! Please stay away from Boston.
