Top Boston Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer has been placed on the seven-day injured list after he was pulled from the Portland Sea Dogs' July 30 game.

The shortstop has been diagnosed with a hip injury and is expected to return to action after his week on the IL has passed. Mayer wasn't in the lineup for Portland's game on July 31, but his IL stint began Aug. 1.

The 21-year-old's 2023 season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, and he's posted a bounce-back season this year. Mayer is batting .307/.370/.480 with a .850 OPS and he boasts an Eastern League-leading 28 doubles.

Red Sox Nation has been itching for Mayer's promotion to Triple-A for some time, and the Red Sox's director of player development Brian Abraham suggested the call to Worcester should come soon for the young shortstop. Mayer has been in Portland since last season, and now he'll have to wait at least another week for the call.

Red Sox top prospect Marcelo Mayer to IL with hip injury, Roman Anthony makes Sea Dogs history

Days after a misfired Tweet had Boston fans in a spiral about Roman Anthony's future with the Red Sox organization, the No. 2 prospect is still wearing a Portland Sea Dogs uniform. He also set a team record yesterday.

Anthony let insiders and Red Sox fans everywhere know he still has his sights set on Boston by blasting the hardest-hit home run in Sea Dogs history. The 116-mile-per-hour bullet was also the hardest-hit ball by any player in the Red Sox organization all year, including the majors.

Anthony has posted a .254/.356/.477 slash line with a .833 OPS with Double-A Portland over 75 games this season. He's mashed 13 homers, 18 doubles and three triples. The 20-year-old won the first-ever All-Star Futures Skills Showcase this year, and like Mayer, Red Sox Nation is clamoring for Anthony's call-up to Triple-A.
