The Boston Red Sox may see their rookie sensation return to the active roster soon as he’s heading to Pawtucket for his rehab assignment.

Ladies and Gentleman of Red Sox Nation we vary well may see the Ice Horse galloping around the basepaths soon. It was announced today that Michael Chavis will be joining Triple-A Pawtucket for his rehab assignment. He joins the PawSox in Buffalo tonight and was in the starting lineup against the Bisons.

This is good news as the Red Sox are in dire need of a spark as they enter the final few weeks of the season. With a massive deficit to overcome in the standings and not much time to do so, having Chavis back with the main roster could give them the energy they need.

Boston has been without their rookie star since August 12th, due to an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. He picked up the injury after making a spectacular diving catch in center field.

Chavis burst onto the scene in April as an early-season call-up but would soon level out offensively. The biggest asset he offers to Alex Cora and the Red Sox is his versatility. He was primarily a first/third baseman in the minors but he was called upon to play second and he rose to the challenge. He worked at the position with AC as well as his fellow teammates so he could learn the position quickly.

When injuries began to pile up for Boston, he was the one that was used to plug the gaps in the defense. Chavis would see significant playing time at first when both Steve Pearce and Mitch Moreland caught injury bug and he’d also split time at second with Brock Holt and Marco Hernandez. Though he’s only 24, Chavis has become a big contributor both at the plate and in the field for the Red Sox.

The Ice Horse found himself in early Rookie of the Year talks before a cold spell at the plate sunk his numbers. Add in the injury and sadly I don’t think he’s even in the conversation anymore. But it’s hard to write this season off as anything but a success as Boston now has a player that can be used at second or first base, both of which will see multiple free agents this winter.

Next. Red Sox place a baffling amount of faith in Chris Owings. dark

In his 95 games this year he’s got a decent slash line of .254/.322/.444/.766, he’s also smacked 18 moon bombs while tallying 58 RBI. I’ll take that from a guy who at the beginning of the year we weren’t expecting to see all while learning a position he’s never played professionally before. If the Red Sox can get Chavis back with a decent amount of time left in the year I feel he can be the boost this team needs to get into the postseason.
