Around a week ago, I posted here about how Andrew Miller may have found his niche in the bullpen. So far he’s been nothing short of dominant in the bullpen– as he has allowed no runs (and only two hits) in five sharp innings to start the year. Today I am going to take another gamble and say that the Red Sox should make Andrew Miller their closer. Alfredo Aceves has said himself that he is uncomfortable working as the Red Sox closer– plus, Aceves is probably more valuable as a long reliever/spot starter anyways. Miller has been unsuccessful as a starter in his career, but I feel he could do well as the Red Sox closer.
Only working for an inning or so could prove excellent for Miller in every way– he has currently pitched in three straight games and his average fastball velocity is 94.8 mph this year. That is an even three mph faster than his career average. He also has been extremely efficient– only throwing 10 pitches over an inning last night– and has walked none this year. If Miller could handle the pressure, I think he could be much more than just a lefty out of the bullpen. I think Miller could be a very good closer, which would also allow Alfredo Aceves to fit into the role he’s most comfortable in.
