He gave up two runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking none. This was his second straight start without allowing a free pass. It was also encouraging to not see him not have a “hangover start” given he was one hit shy of a perfecto in his last outing. His five strikeouts were enough to move him up to fifth on the Red Sox all of all time strikeout leaders.

The offense finally came alive in the third inning. David Price would only record one out before the route began. After giving up an RBI single to David Ortiz, Price would exit with an arm injury. Jamey Wright would come in to relieve Price, but ironically provided very little relief at all. He would allow both inherited runners to score. The third inning route would be capped off by a grand slam by Stephen Drew.

The score would remain 8-2 until the eighth inning, when Will Middlebrooks pretended Kyle Farnsworth was RA Dickey and took him deep for a solo home run. Koji Uehara and Jose De La Torre would pitch a scoreless eighth and ninth to secure the victory.

Felix Doubront opposes Alex Cobb tonight in the rubber match.

Ryan Dempster simply didn’t have it today. He would give up six runs (all earned), seven hits (three of them home runs), and one walk while striking out six. On the plus side, he did go at least five innings and continued his high strikeout total.

The “star” for the Sox offense was Mike Napoli, who went three for four with a double and a home run.

As bad as the pitching and hitting were for the Sox for today’s game, an even bigger concern arose in the fourth inning. While trying to prevent Edwin Encarnacion‘s eventual home run off Dempster, Shane Victorino would crash ribs-first into the right field wall. Victorino exited the game and would later pay a visit to the hospital. Hopefully his injury isn’t too serious.

With the loss, the Sox are now 2-8 for their last 10 games. They’ve now dropped three straight series and are 4-8 for the month of May. Many of us figured they wouldn’t continue at the pace they had been going in April. But they need to get back on the right track and end this skid soon. With who they have on schedule for the remainder of the month, it’s not an unreasonable goal for them to at least break even.

Let me begin by saying that I’m not hitting the panic button. After one of the best starts in franchise history in April, the 2013 Red Sox were likely to hit a bump in the road eventually. So far, the month of May has been that bump. While I don’t feel Ben Cherington should be quick to the trigger in making changes right now, it’s never too early to point out areas of concern as of right now. These are areas where the Sox are getting subpar results and if things don’t improve soon, they might need to look for an upgrade.

Apr 27, 2013; Boston, MA, USA; Boston Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew (left) goes to the mound to visit starting pitcher Felix Doubront after he walked in a run during the first inning of a baseball game against the Houston Astros at Fenway Park. Mandatory Credit: Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

Starting Rotation:

With all due respect to Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, and Ryan Dempster (and the solid outings each have provided so far), you can never have enough starting pitching. That old belief is very obvious when looking at the state of the fourth and fifth slots of the Sox rotation. John Lackey has looked pretty good so far (Only one of the five runs he gave up last night was earned. But that error night was his error). But he’s still a guy coming back from Tommy John surgery, and he’ll be closely monitored throughout the season. Felix Doubront has been disastrous. He does average over a strikeout per inning, but he allows too many walks and base hits. That lethal combination makes his economy of pitches lackluster and he usually exits the game too early.

The Sox do have a nice influx of pitching prospects to help out. But if Allen Webster‘s outing this past Tuesday taught us anything, it’s that rolling the dice on prospects is a risky business. I do believe guys like Webster, Rubby DeLaRosa, Anthony Ranaudo, Matt Barnes, and Henry Owens are going to be huge factors to the success of the franchise’s future. The return of Franklin Morales could help if the Sox decide to use him as a starter. Right now there’s really no trade market for an established starter. But things could change by July 31st.

Possible Worthwhile Trade Acquisition(s)

Apr 25, 2013; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee (33) delivers to the plate during the first inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citizens Bank Park. Mandatory Credit: Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Cliff Lee
The Phils aren’t moving him as of right now. With Roy Halladay now on the DL following a shoulder surgery, Philadelphia is actually in buyer’s mode. But if they continue to tread water and find themselves in a similar position by the end of July, they could make Lee available. Lee is owed a lot of money ($25 million in 2014 and 2015 and a $27.5 million vesting option for 2016) and they won’t just hand him to the Sox. But this is likely their last chance to unload that contract for a decent return. With the depth of the Sox farm system, Boston finds themselves in a unique position. They could walk away if the Phils ask for too much. If a package doesn’t include any of Webster, DeLaRosa, Barnes, Ranaudo, Owens, Garin Cecchini, Blake Swihart, Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley, or Bryce Brentz, a trade for Lee might be worth it.

Okay enough about pitching. Here’s the other area of concern:

Third Base

Will Middlebrooks‘ numbers for 2013 as of May 9th: .194/.229/.379/.608

Middlebrooks vs Toronto: .320/.370/.880/1.250

April 26, 2013; Boston, MA USA; Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks (16) reacts after getting put out at third base during the eighth inning against the Houston Astros at Fenway Park. Mandatory Credit: Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Middlebrooks vs everybody else: .162/.194/.253/.447

Middlebrooks vs everybody else if you remove the Houston series: .119/.149/.167/.316

Long story short: Middlebrooks has been a subpar producer from a position where above average offensive production is needed. His lack of plate discipline is a concern for both the present and future (39 strikeouts versus only five walks). One of the biggest reasons the club hasn’t really considered demoting Middlebrooks right now is simply the fact there really isn’t another third base prospect near major league ready (Michael Almanzar has only 29 games at Double A and Garin Cecchini is in High A). There’s no current trade market and the only free agent to be who might be a worthwhile pickup is Michael Young.

Different Scenarios For Third Base If Middlebrooks Is Sent Down

Free Agents Scott Rolen or Chipper Jones

An unlikely avenue they travel, but a possibility nonetheless. Both can field the position efficiently and could provide an offensive upgrade. But both guys are injury prone and won’t sign unless the price is right. But in the case of Jones, we have a guy who’s at peace with retirement and is undeniably proud of spending his entire career in one organization.

Mauro Gomez Part II

Brandon Snyder, a first round pick by the Orioles in the star-studded 2005 draft, has been on fire at Pawtucket with a line of .327/.425/.644/1.069 with seven home runs. But he’s never been able to carry that success over to the major league level and has played more first base than third base. The Sox ultimately went down this road with Mauro Gomez last year. Gomez never hit for much power with the big club and was a subpar fielder at third.

Xander Bogaerts

Though a shortstop by trade, the athletically gifted Bogaerts could eventually find himself moving off of shortstop. Third base or left field are the likely possibilities. With Bogaerts hitting well at Portland, the Sox could give Bogaerts the call and put him at third. But it should be noted that he’s played less games at the upper levels than Jackie Bradley had before making his major league debut. So there’s a good chance that Bogaerts could find himself overmatched as well.

Get Creative

They could call up Jose Iglesias and move Stephen Drew to third. Iglesias will likely not be hitting the way he had been coming out the gate, but his glove will help the pitching staff in run prevention. Drew has never played third in his professional career, but he has the range to be a viable defender at the position. His bat has come around and he would be an upgrade over Middlebrooks.

It’s still early and there’s still a chance Middlebrooks and Doubront make the necessary adjustments and turn things around. But if they don’t, the Sox need to consider upgrades.

The offense could do very little against Twins starter Scott Diamond. The highlight of the night for the offense would be David Ortiz extending his hitting streak to 27 games (30 more to go).

The game got out of reach in the eighth when there was a collision between David Ross and Will Middlebrooks which led to both players leaving the game. Pedro Ciriaco would supplant Middlebrooks at third and would botch two grounders which helped lead to a big inning for Minnesota.

Tough loss for the Sox on Tuesday. But the bigger loss could be a huge void at third. After Middlebrooks, there really isn’t a major league-ready third baseman waiting in the wings. Here’s hoping his injury isn’t serious.

The Red Sox were unable to avoid the sweep today with a 4-3 loss to the Texas Rangers. Jon Lester gave up three earned runs in six innings. A mediocre 4.50 ERA on the day, but still good enough for a quality start. He walked three and struck out seven. Clayton Mortensen added to his case to be DFA’d by giving up a walk off single to Adrian Beltre in the bottom of the ninth.

On the plus side: David Ortiz homered and extended his hitting streak to 25 games (32 more to hearing Yankee fans whine about it’s legitimacy). The three runs scored by the Sox were the most they scored in a game for the series. David Ross also homered and stole a base. Yes, you read correctly: Our backup catcher did steal a base.

The pitching matchups for this series were definitely in Texas’ favor. That being said, if these two clubs were to meet in a best of five or best of seven series in October, our rotation looks somewhat overmatched.

Napoli would go 2-4 with a double and a grand slam while recording five RBIs in tonight’s (or last night’s since I’m writing this past midnight) 9-6 win vs the Oakland A’s. Will Middlebrooks would also add to the offense with a three run homer of his own.

Felix Doubront was once again a mixed bad. He would walk five batters and sacrifice three hits. But he would also limit the damage to three runs in 6.2 innings, good enough for a quality start and his second win of the season. Clay Mortensen would give up the other three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Junichi Tazawa would pitch two-thirds of an inning in the eighth for his fifth hold. Andrew Bailey would walk a batter but strike out two to notch his fourth save.

With tonight’s win, the Red Sox have now won eight of ten and are tied with the Texas Rangers for the AL’s best record.

After the slow starts of 2011 and 2012, it’s so refreshing to see the Red Sox get off to a hot start. They have definitely done that to start things out this season. Tonight’s 6-3 win over the Cleveland Indians now puts the Red Sox at 10-4, the second best record in the American League. Not too bad for a team the most pessimistic of fans viewed as a downgrade from 2012.

Apr 17, 2013; Cleveland, OH, USA; Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Alfredo Aceves (91) delivers in the second inning against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.
The match up on paper was actually in the Tribe’s favor with Justin Masterson going against Alfredo Aceves. For the majority of the outings Masterson has had against his former team, he has been rather dominant. Tonight was an exception. The Sox were able to chase Masterson after only five innings, scoring four runs off 11 hits. Aceves would also go five innings, giving up three earned runs, but still good enough for the win. Junichi Tazawa, Koji Uehara, and Andrew Baileywould combine for four perfect innings and eight strikeouts. More and more this pitching staff is looking top-notch.

The offense had multiple catalysts on the night. Jacoby Ellsbury and Shane Victorino would each record three hits and score two runs. Mike Napoli and Daniel Nava would each record two RBI. Mike Carp got his first start of the season. He wouldn’t disappoint either, going 3-3.

With the win tonight, the Sox have now taken four out of five series. They go for their second straight sweep tomorrow.

The Orioles defeated the Red Sox 5-2. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Felix Doubront would pitch five plus innings allowing three runs. He walked none and had six strikeouts. But he would give up a total of nine hits, five of them for extra bases (four doubles and a home run). The Sox are really counting on Doubront to take the next step in becoming that reliable middle of the rotation arm they envision him to be. The K/BB ratio on the night was outstanding. The five extra base hits are a concern though. If he can limit them to just singles, he can allow himself more double play opportunities.

The main antagonists on the night were Jose Reyes, Mark DeRosa, and Josh Johnson. Reyes would go four for five with two doubles and home run (the latter would provide a blown save for Junichi Tazawa). Mark DeRosa would hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the bottom of the second and a home run to cut the Sox lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Although the Sox hit Johnson rather hard (nine hits, two walks, four runs/three earned), he would hit Jose Iglesias in the right arm with a 93-mph fastball. Iglesias would leave the game with a contusion. With Stephen Drew nearing a return, it might be the last we see of Iglesias for a little while.

The big story on offense was the team finally cracking into the home run category with Will Middlebrooks and Mike Napoli each going deep. The lineup would also combine for 12 hits and six walks (fan favorite Pedro Ciriaco would replace Iglesias, filling in nicely going two for four with an RBI). Unfortunately, they did strand 33 baserunners. Not my intent to damper anybody’s spirit with that number, but it makes one wonder just how dangerous they really can be with even more timely hitting.

Aside from Junichi Tazawa’s homer to Reyes, the bullpen did a stellar job. Koji Uehara would relieve Doubront with a runner already in scoring position. He would proceeded to strike out the next two batters and induce a flyout to strand the tying run. Andrew Bailey would pitch a scoreless eighth while allowing a hit and a walk. Joel Hanrahan would allow one walk in a scoreless ninth to record save number two on the season.

Tonight’s win assures no worse than a .500 record for the Sox when they return for the opener at Fenway. Hopefully they can steal at least one more before that though. John Lackey takes the hill tomorrow in his first start since 2011.

March 24, 2013; Clearwater, FL, USA; Boston Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. (74) works out prior to the game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Bright House Networks Field.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been very impressed with how Bradley has played this spring and he’s played well to justify this promotion. Being an Omaha, Nebraska native, I had the privilege of watching Bradley play in the College World Series. As a sophomore, he was a catalyst in the University of South Carolina’s 2010 national championship (the first of two in a row). The Red Sox pulled off quite the heist in the 2011 draft. Bradley had a subpar 2011 season due to a lingering wrist injury. Had it not been for that injury, chances are the Red Sox wouldn’t have even been able to get Bradley with their top overall pick (19th overall which they used on RHP Matt Barnes). Instead they were able to burn the 19th, 26th (catcher Blake Swihart), and 36th (LHP Henry Owens) before taking Bradley with the 40th overall pick.

Bradley recovered nicely from the wrist injury and started to climb the ladder quickly in 2012, ending the season with Double A Portland. This spring, Bradley has had the best numbers out of all the players in camp. He definitely is the best overall option to pencil in the lineup with David Ortiz recovers from a wrist injury (not to mention we don’t know if Jose Iglesias will finally start to hit with Stephen Drew out).

However, I still feel it would’ve been for the best to start Bradley out with Triple A Pawtucket. Spring training stats are probably not the best way to decided if a guy is ready for The Show or not (though John Farrell keeps saying there were other intangibles he sees in the kid to go with those numbers). This will also start his club control clock. Had the Sox waited until the tenth game of the season they would’ve guaranteed themselves control of Bradley’s services for 2019, Bradley’s age 29 season.

Not unlike Jacoby Ellsbury, Jackie Bradley is also represented by Scott Boras. Boras clients tend to bleed out the arbitration years and hit the open market after the club control expires. For most players, the age 29 season is a middle of his prime season. If the Red Sox fail to keep Bradley off the 25 man roster for less than 172 days, Bradley will hit the market after 2018. The Red Sox would then either do A. Lose him to another club or B. Risk signing him to a deal fit for a Boras client. Have a feeling scenario B could bring back Carl Crawford deja vu.

Of course, there is still hope. The Red Sox could option Bradley to Pawtucket for a few weeks once Ortiz returns. That would keep 2019 intact. But I fear two things might happen: 1. If Bradley really struggles out of the gate, could it do serious damage to his psyche (he seems to have a demeanor that would prevent that but still…) 2. If Bradley does indeed to well and prove himself major league-ready, how do you explain why you’re demoting the kid? It just seems that the Red Sox could’ve avoided a potential controversy by just simply outrighting Bradley for two weeks and have Ryan Sweeney play placeholder in the meantime.

There also have been a few Boras clients who were exceptions to the rule (Jared Weaver to name one) who opted to sign an extension. If Bradley truly loves being in Boston, maybe he’ll do the same. As a fan, I hope he plays well enough so the club will actually want to extend him. In his prime, I see a 20/20 ceiling with a very good average and awesome OBP. Will also hit a good share of doubles and triples and play gold glove defense. For 2013: A potential ROY candidate. .270-.275 average, .345 OBP, 5-10 homers. At some point, maybe John Farrell will decide to have the stronger-armed and rangier Bradley swap spots with Jacoby Ellsbury as well. We shall see…

Here’s my 2012 predictions:

AL East
1. Blue Jays
2. *Red Sox
3. Rays
4. Orioles
5. Yankees

This division could be a dogfight all season long. On paper, Toronto is the favorite. Just comes down to how all these big name acquisitions gel. The Red Sox will be much improved with better pitching and team chemistry. If the Jays don’t gel, look for the Sox to steal the division. Otherwise I do have them winning a wild card. Tampa’s pitching staff was depleted somewhat and I still think Wil Meyers benefited from the hitter-friendly PCL. Baltimore didn’t do much to upgrade this winter and it’s doubtful they go 29-9 in one run games again. But they still do have an emerging young core. Can’t say that about New York. Another year older and not much depth.

AL Central
1. Tigers
2. Royals
3. White Sox
4. Indians
5. Twins

KC will be the runner up in a division Detroit should run away with. The ChiSox have talent and could give KC a fit for second place. The Indians made some nice additions with Michael Bourne and Nick Swisher. The former a solid leadoff guy and the latter’s a reliable power/OBP guy, but not a middle of the order threat. Still didn’t do enough on the pitching front. The Twins are still in rebuilding mode.

AL West
1. Angels
2.*Rangers
3. A’s
4. Mariners
5. Astros

The Halos look very, very good. Two former MVPs in Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols are backing up budding young stars in Mike Trout and Mark Trumbo. The rotation is solid, but not great. Still should be enough to fend off the Rangers who were gutted but are still a very talented club. Still don’t know how the A’s made the playoffs last year. Seattle should be better. All four of these teams get to beat up on the Astros a good 18 times each. That should help the old winning percentage.

*-denotes Wild Card

In today’s 8-3 loss to the Twins, Ryan Dempstergave up three runs in four innings (three walks and three hits to go with four strikeouts). Despite two subpar final outings, Dempster was able to end spring training with a solid 3.74 ERA. In his career he’s been pretty good at putting bad outings behind him. Hopefully he can be the durable workhorse the Sox are hoping (and paying for) him to be.

The offense looked lackluster on the day. They struck out eight times and left 12 men on base. The highlight of the day was Pedro Ciriaco‘s triple.

Lackluster performances at the end of spring training aren’t uncommon. Let’s just hope they turn up the intensity when the games start to matter.

Junichi Tazawa would have an interesting line on the day. In two innings he gave up two runs despite not allowing a single hit.

The bats were rather quiet today. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Will Middlebrooks would each record three total bases on the day.

The best performance was undoubtedly the one given by Buchholz. He is being counted on to be the number two starter on this staff. In order to do that he’ll have to avoid the DL, keep the ERA and WHIP down, and finally eclipse the 200 inning plateau for the first time in his career. If he carries this current momentum into the regular season, I like those chances.

The lineup went 16 for 40 (.400 average) with two walks (.429 OBP) but would also leave 19 runners on base.

A few familiar faces were in the O’s lineup today. Luis Exposito saw some game action behind the plate late in the game and struck out in one at-bat. Yamaico Navarro (who was traded for Mike Aviles who was later traded for John Farrell) had an RBI single in one at-bat. Danny Valencia would hit a solo home run late in the game.

Against a watered-down Toronto lineup (Jose Bautista and Colby Rasmus were the only players expected to be on the Jays’ opening day roster) the Red Sox prevailed 5-3. Clay Buchholz pitched four shutout innings while allowing three hits and striking out one. He’s now pitched eight and a third scoreless so far this spring. Andrew Miller pitched one inning and gave up a two run homer, the first time he’s allowed any runs so far. Andrew Bailey pitched a scoreless sixth and gave up a hit. Prospect Allen Webster gave up three hits and an unearned run (fielding error by Jackie Bradley who went one for one) while striking out three en route to a three inning save.

Mike Napoli was Boston’s leader offensively (two for three, single, double, one RBI).

A few familiar faces from 2012 were on the field for the opposition today. Justin Germano started for the Blue Jays and gave up two runs in three innings. Andy LaRoche was hitless in three at-bats. Former future middle of the order threat Lars Anderson went two for four (single, double, RBI).

The win puts the Red Sox back at .500 (9-9) for the spring.

A few observations from today’s loss:

Jackie Bradley drew two walks and struck out in three plate appearances. More and more he’s developing a reputation as a guy who will be a grinder in the lineup for years to come.

Jonny Gomes doubled and knocked in a run. Jarrod Saltalamacchia also hit a two-bagger. Jose Iglesias drew a walk.

Jon Lester pitched four innings, giving up one run striking out three while allowing five baserunners (three walks and two hits). Steven Wright gave up five runs (all earned) with three walks in two innings. Rubby De La Rosa was touched up for the first time this spring (three runs, only two earned, two strikeouts). Junichi Tazawa pitched one scoreless innings while giving up one hit.

Once again, it’s only spring training. It’s encouraging to see the good but at the same time we shouldn’t get too worked up over the good nor the bad.

Boston’s 4-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays featured several good impressions. Steven Wright pitched two shutout innings giving up two hits while striking out three. That was good enough to earn the win over 2012 Cy Young winner and prized trade acquisition, R.A. Dickey. Prospect Allen Webster would follow Wright. Webster would pitch two innings, giving up one run on two hits while striking out four. Both pitchers are on the 40 man roster and are likely to be up at some point in 2013.

From the offensive front, Jackie Bradley Jr. recorded three hits in three at-bats to go with a run, RBI, and a walk (one double and four total bases). Second baseman Brock Holt recorded two singles and scored one run. Holt is projected to begin the year with Pawtucket and is on the 40 man roster. If an injury were to occur in the infield, he’s a candidate to be called up. Bradley will either begin 2013 in Portland or Pawtucket. He’s not on the 40 man as of right now, but could force the big club’s hand if he continues to rake in the minors.

It’s only spring training, but count me in as one who’s excited for 2013 to get underway.

It’s safe to say that Andrew Bailey‘s first impression in 2012 wasn’t the best. In fact it was forgettable. It was so bad that GM Ben Cherington went out and traded for then Pirates’ closer Joel Hanrahan. Manager John Farrell would follow the news of the deal by declaring that Hanrahan has supplanted Bailey as the go-to ninth inning man come Opening Day. All this bad news for Bailey has left a popular belief that he’ll be dealt some time during spring training. Here’s a case for holding onto Bailey.

Sep 23, 2012; Boston, MA, USA; Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Andrew Bailey (40) pitches against the Baltimore Orioles during the ninth inning at Fenway Park. Mandatory Credit: Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports

1. By the looks of Josh Reddick‘s 2012 home run output and the steady rise of Miles Head, the Red Sox appeared to have sold high for Bailey’s services. Even if another club were to be without their closer for a specific period of time, it’s very unlikely the Red Sox would receive a return similar to the package they originally gave up. Long story short: Never sell low.

2. There’s no guarantee that Joel Hanrahan will be a lights-out closer in the AL East. His 2012 numbers for Pittsburgh were rather pedestrian, hence why the Red Sox were able to get him for a relatively low cost (no offense to Mark Melancon, Stolmy Pimentel, Ivan DeJesus, or Jerry Sands fans). If Hanrahan falters, Bailey has a chance to reclaim the closer’s role.

3. Even if Hanrahan doesn’t falter, Bailey can spend 2013 reestablishing his value. With two seasons of control left, the Red Sox could A. Deal Bailey at the July 31st deadline or in the 2013-2014 offseason or B. Attempt for a double jackpot by hoping Hanrahan leaves as a qualifying offer-eligible free agent after 2013 and Bailey repeats sequence in 2014.

4. You can never have enough pitching. Of course there will be exceptions to this rule for this year’s spring training. There are currently ten relievers competing for seven spots in the bullpen. At least one or two guys will be cut or traded by the time spring training concludes (barring injury of course). Bailey’s track record should secure him a spot if he has a good spring. In addition to that, he’s been nothing but professional in the aftermath of his demotion. After the most recent Alfredo Aceves incident, professionalism is an intangible that shouldn’t be taken for granted.

A lot can still happen between now and the end of spring training. But unless an overwhelming package is offered (ex: St. Louis offering top OF prospect Oscar Taveras or pitching prospect Shelby Miller), Andrew Bailey should remain with the Red Sox for at least the first half of 2013. Here’s hoping he reminds us why the club traded for him in the first place (with holds in the place of saves).

While following various articles and posts covering the Red Sox 2012 offseason, I’ll usually stumble upon a commentary or two that criticizes GM Ben Cherington. Some will claim he’s “in over his head as a GM” and others are ready to dub his tenure as “a catostrophic failure” after just one season and two offseasons. To the critics of Boston’s GM, as well as those who are uncertain about Cherington, I must ask this question, “Is Cherington being judged fairly, especially considering the circumstances?”

May 2, 2012; Boston, MA, USA; Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington speaks with reporters prior to a game against the Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park. Mandatory Credit: Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports

Cherington was hired by the Red Sox in 1999. He worked his way up in the front office, becoming one of Theo Epstein’s right hand men during his tenure as GM. He also served a brief stint as Co-GM along with Jed Hoyer when Epstein first departed the club after the 05 season. He and Hoyer would acquire Mike Lowell and Josh Beckett during that tenure, two players who were key contributors to the 2007 World Series Championship Team. When Epstein departed the organization (again) after two disappointing seasons, Cherington finally got a well-deserved promotion.

Cherington was immediately undermined by his boss,Larry Lucchino, in his first major move as GM. He was ready to hire his choice, Dale Sveum. He was instead forced to go along with Lucchino’s choice, Bobby Valentine, after a prolonged managerial search. The less we say about Valentine’s one season as manager, the better.

Thanks to Theo Epstein’s splurging of the previous offseasons, Cherington had to be creative in roster building in the 2011-2012 offseason. He traded Marco Scutaro to the Colorado Rockies for Clay Mortensen. Although Scoot would later be traded to the Giants and play a pivotal role in the postseason (NLCS MVP) en route to a World Series Championship, the Red Sox should have no regrets in this trade. Mortensen would up being a viable bullpen option and Mike Aviles was a solid shortstop for most of the season. Cherington was also able to sign then undervalued outfielder Cody Ross with the extra budget space.

In hindsight, many criticize Cherington’s moves on the pitching front.

He traded Jed Lowrie and Kyle Weiland to the Houston Astros for Mark Melancon. Although he finished strong in 2012, Melancon’s one year in Boston was pretty bad. Lowrie would hit 16 home runs in only 97 games. This deal should be considered a wash since Melancon would be part of the Joel Hanrahan trade and Lowrie’s still the same oft-injured, so-so fielding shortstop with power. Considering the injuries the 2012 Red Sox had, would another oft-injured player have made a difference?

More criticism is cited in the swap of Josh Reddick, Miles Head, and Raul Alcantara for Andrew Bailey and Ryan Sweeney. Yes Reddick hit 32 home runs. He also had a .305 OBP and struck out 151 times. Bailey was plagued with injuries as well as Sweeney. Considering the lineup had a mediocre OBP, another guy with a mediocre OBP (who strikes out too much) wouldn’t have made much of a difference. Fans should be more upset about losing Miles Head who’s climbing the ladder steadily and could be major league ready pretty soon. Bailey has two years of club control left. If he reestablishes trade value or leaves as a qualifying offer-eligible free agent, this deal won’t look too bad for the Red Sox.

After falling out of contention thanks to injuries, lack of chemistry, and disdain for their manager, Cherington made a very bold move: he was able to trade three expensive contracts (the oft-injured Carl Crawford, under performing and surly Josh Beckett, and the good but replaceable Adrian Gonzalez) and Nick Punto to the LA Dodgers for two excellent pitching prospects (Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster) and three spare parts
(James Loney, Jerry Sands, Ivan DeJesus Jr) as well as regaining vast financial flexibility. He fired Valentine the day after the season ended and hired his guy, John Farrell.

This offseason, Cherington has done an exceptional job in upgrading the roster. He hasn’t surrendered a single draft pick or top prospect. On paper, the pitching staff looks better than it did this time last year. The new additions on offense come with question marks, but if they pay off, Cherington will look brilliant.

Cherington’s two predecessors, Dan Duquette and Theo Epstein held the GM position for eight and nine seasons respectively. Duquette was let go after a disastrous 2001 season and new ownership took over. His tenure was a mixed bag. He acquired many key pieces of the 2004 World Series Championship Team. He also made his share of blunders, especially in the draft. Theo chose to leave after drifting away from his big picture view and “Feeding the Monster”, leaving the big league club in turmoil. Cherington looks to return the philosophy back to the successful formula. It’s too early to declare him a failure as a GM. Let’s let it play out for a few more seasons before declaring him a success or failure.

No, Mike Lowell is not currently employed by the Red Sox front office. But his tenure with the Red Sox from 2006-2010 could provide some insight into their pursuits of Shane Victorino and Mike Napoli.

Lowell first came to the Red Sox as a throw in. Besides giving up a package of prospects that included Hanley Ramirez and Anibal Sanchez, taking on Lowell’s remaining two years and $18 million was a necessary cost in acquiring then budding ace Josh Beckett. Considering Lowell was coming off the worst season of his career in which he hit .236/.298/.360/.658 with only eight home runs and 58 RBI, this was a very expensive risk. The club even acquired the immortal Hee-Seop Choi as insurance in case Lowell’s 2005 was a sign of things to come.

October 2, 2012; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers left fielder Shane Victorino (8) advances to third on a triple in the seventh inning against the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium.
Lowell would prove the critics wrong, playing 307 games and hitting .305/.359/.488/.847 with 40 home runs and 200 RBI in 2006-2007. His swing was tailor-made for Fenway, he became known as a “doubles machine” (84 in those two seasons), and it all culminated with a World Series MVP.

In 2012, Shane Victorino had the worst season of his career (.255/.321/.383/.704 with eleven homers and 55 RBI’s). Those numbers are actually better than what Lowell put up in 05. Prior to that, Victorino was a dynamic player who’s capable of double digit homers and triples, 25+ doubles, 20+ steals. He’s only 32, the same age Lowell was in his first season with the Red Sox. Unlike Lowell, he’s already proven he can handle a big market. Now with his nagging hand injury behind him, as well as the stress of pending free agency, Victorino can get back to being the dynamic player he was with the Phillies. Here’s hoping Red Sox fans will be saying “Cody Who?” after 2013.

After this feel-good story, why such a long wait for Napoli? Well…

Sep 28, 2012; Arlington, TX, USA; Texas Rangers designated hitter Mike Napoli (25) bats during the game against the Los Angeles Angels at Rangers Ballpark.
After he became a free agent after the 2007 season, Lowell would eventually re-sign with the Red Sox for three years $37.5 million. In the 2008 season, Lowell would start to suffer hip ailments. He tried playing through the pain, playing in 113 games putting up a .274/.338/.461/.798 with 17 homers and 73 RBI’s. But the pain would be too overwhelming. The Red Sox would shut Lowell down in the postseason where they would eventually lose to the Rays in seven games in the ALCS. He had a similar season in 2009, playing 119 games with a .290/.337/.474/.811 with 17 homers and 75 RBI’s. Lowell would play a reduced role in his final season in 2010, playing 73 games (only four at third base) with a .239/.307/.367/.674 line with five homers and 26 RBI before calling it a career.

The original deal with Napoli was a similar one to what Lowell got in the 07-08 offseason. When concerns over his hip came up in the results of his physical, the club sighted a recent player with a similar problem. They eventually would agree to a new deal for only one season. Wise move by the Red Sox in case Napoli’s hip condition doesn’t improve. Wise move by Napoli as well considering he would’ve gotten even less going back on the market as damaged goods.

After scratching and clawing with little reward as a minor league prospect in the Arizona and Pittsburgh organizations, Pedro Ciriaco entered minor league free agency after the 2011 season. He signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox and, despite a strong spring training, began the year in Triple A Pawtucket.

After the roster was depleted with injuries (yet again), Ciriaco was added to the big league roster. In 76 games, Ciriaco put up a line of .293/.315/.390/.705 while spending time at shortstop, second base, third base, designated hitter, and all three outfield spots. Against the Yankees (against whom he had the most plate appearances) Ciriaco put up an outrageous line of .415/.436/.566/1.002, establishing himself as a “Yankee killer”. Long story short: Ciriaco was by far one of the few feel good stories of an otherwise miserable 2012 season.

Sort of reminded me of a guy who made a similar splash not so long ago.

September 26, 2012; Boston, MA, USA; Boston Red Sox third baseman Pedro Ciriaco (top) forces out Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria (3) at second base during the second inning at Fenway Park. Mandatory Credit: Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

In 2010 Darnell McDonald, once a very promising first-round pick turned minor league journeyman, also made the very best of a situation. The 2010 Red Sox had been plagued by injuries (seems like the theme of the past three seasons), McDonald found his way onto the big league roster and made the most of it. McDonald put up a line of .270/.336/.429/.766 in 117 games. The following season, McDonald came crashing back down to Earth, albeit in a limited role instead of consistent playing time, with a line of .236 /.303/.401/.704 in 175 plate appearances. Last season McDonald only put up a line of .214/.309/.369/ .678 in 99 plate appearances. He would be later be designated for assignment before being claimed by the Yankees, where he was later DFA’d again and outrighted after a brief four game cameo.

Jun 20, 2012; Boston, MA, USA; Boston Red Sox left fielder Darnell McDonald (54) prior to a game against the Miami Marlins at Fenway Park. Mandatory Credit: Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports

I bring up the McDonald comparison because he was a similar story then to what Ciriaco is now: minor league journeyman makes a big splash in season but then comes back down to Earth (though the future is still a blank slate for Ciriaco) the following season. Not saying Ciriaco will be just like McDonald, but it’s worth pointing out Ciriaco’s pros and cons.

Pros: Ciriaco is a versatile defensive player who’s capable of playing all three outfield spots as well as shortstop, second base, and third base and playing adequately enough defensively. He’s got very good speed on the basepaths. He stole sixteen bases out of nineteen attempts (84% success rate) in 2012. Though the sample size is small, Ciriaco is capable of making consistent contact and putting up a solid batting average.

Cons: Take away that amazing stat line vs the Yankees, Ciriaco put up a line of only .262/.283/.345/.345 in 2012. He doesn’t have much power (not too big a concern since he’s primarily a middle infielder). He’s also not a poster boy for excellent plate discipline either. He only walked eight times in 272 plate appearances last season. Compared to the 47 times he struck out, that’s a very lopsided differential. Back to that line vs the Yankees: Don’t expect that to last. Every team’s pitching staff will get a book on the guy and discover his weak points. It’ll be up to Ciriaco to respond to that when it happens.

Final analysis: 2013 is still a blank slate and Ciriaco and Darnell McDonald are two different players. McDonald seemed to be more of a guy who did much better with consistent playing time and couldn’t adjust to a major league bench role. Ciriaco on the other hand played more of a platoon role in 2012 and will do the same going forward. He doesn’t have the power or the plate discipline to be a regular. But if he plays adequate defense at various positions, makes decent contact, and remains a stolen base threat, he should have a job as a reserve on this roster. Here’s hoping all goes well for Ciriaco in 2013.

With the recent signing (pending a physical) of Stephen Drew, it seems like Jose Iglesias will begin the 2013 season with Triple A Pawtucket. This probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise to a significant percentage of Red Sox fans. Iglesias only hit .118/.200/.191/.391 with one home run in 77 plate appearances in 2012. Though there’s a really good chance the lineup will be a very productive one in 2013, it would still be a big gamble to plug Iglesias in there. Even more so in case the likes of Mike Napoli and Shane Victorino put up numbers that resemble their 2012 versions rather than their stellar 2011 performances. Plus given the club’s decent track record of one-year deals working out for the better, the Drew signing should be a solid one.

At this stage, Iglesias seems to be at the edge of a cliff (metaphorically speaking). Simply moving forward from the edge presents Iglesias with a rocky road. Xander Bogaerts is close to surpassing him on the depth chart. There’s also high ceiling prospects not far behind in Tzu-Wei Lin, Jose Vinicio, and Deven Marrero. This will be the last season where Iglesias can be optioned to the minors while remaining on the 40 man roster. If he doesn’t improve his bat, he will likely be removed from the roster at season’s end, effectively falling off the cliff.

In a recent article for the Boston Globe, Tony Massarotti pondered whether the Red Sox should keep Iglesias or package him in a trade. In his recent mailbag, Nick Cafardo stated that Iglesias has always been available, but nobody’s really offered a decent return. That was until a recent article from NESN.com that stated the Pittsburgh Pirates might have interest. In his recent post, Conor Duffy mentioned that the Red Sox and Pirates have been discussing a trade involving closer Joel Hanrahan. Perhaps Iglesias could be included in such a deal.

What does the future hold for Jose Iglesias? That’s anybody’s guess. If he isn’t traded, he’ll be with the organization for at least one more season. If the bat doesn’t improve, he’ll likely fall of that cliff. But his awesome glove could provide a soft landing, so to speak. Perhaps landing a cozy gig as a starter or backup for a small market team.
