Red Sox add new “farm club”

The Red Sox have a new “farm club” and it is not off the horrendous I-95 or near the ever changing weather patterns of Portland, Maine. The new club is not part of a cornerstone of urban development as in Lowell, Massachusetts nor is it located in one of the many development leagues that proliferate in baseball. This “farm club” is located on the roof of venerable Fenway Park.
The Red Sox have joined the urban garden movement and have added rooftop gardens on Fenway. The project will provide fresh produce for consumption within the park, be used as a learning tool and will lead by example for using the urban environment for growing.
The new farm is called “Fenway Farms” and is managed by Green City Growers – an organization that turns the unused urban space into urban farms. The construction of the farm was done by Recover Green Roofs that created the planters and the irrigation system.
The farm will be organic and the produce will change seasonally. The produce will be a range of vegetables such as green beans, eggplant, tomatoes, kale, carrots, lettuce, peppers and cucumbers. The garden will also provide a variety of herbs for use within the park.
As a gardener, this is an exciting opportunity to visit Fenway Park and see exactly what has been accomplished. I wonder if they will actually sell some seeds so you can grow your own Fenway Farm.
