Major League Baseball instituted a new rule this season which allows teams to add an extra man to the roster on the day of a double-header. Today, the Red Sox will be making use of this rule by calling up Tommy Layne, a left-handed pitcher, from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Layne, at age 29, has been very impressive for the PawSox this season, boasting a 5-1 record with a 1.51 ERA this season in 30 appearances.
Red Sox skipper John Farrell told the media that Layne has been very successful against left-handed hitters, but can work with right-handed hitters as well. He also added that the southpaw’s performance has been very consistent for the PawSox this season.
