Grady Sizemore designated for assignment

The Grady Sizemore experiment has come to a close, as he has been designated for assignment by the Red Sox.

The move is not a surprise, although it comes a bit earlier than expected. Garin Cecchini will take Sizemore’s roster spot, according to reports.

The Sox signed Sizemore this past offseason to a team friendly deal, hoping that he could stay healthy and return to his old form. Sizemore rewarded the Sox by hitting .333 in spring training, beating out Jackie Bradley Jr. for the starting job in center and showing no lingering health issues.

After hitting an Opening Day home run, things quickly went downhill for Sizemore. He’s hit .216 on the year and his defense, while promising in spring training, has been average. Brock Holt‘s shift to the outfield, Daniel Nava‘s returning confidence with the bat and Shane Victorino‘s impending return all made Sizemore expendable.

In a somewhat related move, Holt will make his first career start in centerfield tonight.

Holt is mowing my lawn right now and will give the car an oil change. He’ll make the game. What a surprise he has been with his ability to play anywhere. Wish Sizemore well. Someone will pick him up.

I think somebody will give him a chance too, Rick. Guy just ran out of time in Boston.

I hope Cleveland picks him up…. I was really hoping we’d get 60% of the 2008 Grady…Good luck to him in his continued comeback effort, I don’t think there’s a nicer guy in the league….
