Red Sox Pick Up Lester Option

To the absolute surprise of no one the Red Sox picked up the option of Jon Lester for the 2014 season. The option calls for a 13M salary for the 2014 season.

Lester’s playoff performance has been well documented with a stat line that would make Sandy Koufax or Bob Gibson blush. Lester started five games this post season and finished 4-1 with an ERA of 1.56 while striking out 29, coincidentally the same as his age. Lester is now officially that rare bird – “A Big Game Playoff Ace.”

Lester had a productive 2013 season posting a 15-8 record with 213.1 innings pitched and an ERA of 3.75. Lester also started 33 contests and finished with 20 Quality Starts.

Lester and the Red Sox will no doubt be engaged in contract talks to discuss the possibility of extending his service with the Red Sox.
