Harry Burnham, in his recent BSI piece End of Week Starters Are Up In The Air as Rays’ Double Header Looms, made the call. Burnham tagged either Allen Webster or Alfredo Aceves as the starter Wednesday after the Sox had to empty the bullpen tank and use probable starter Franklin Morales in relief.

He also presciently indicated a possible “phantom” DL stint that would keep hot hitting Jose Iglesias with the big club. The game of musical chairs started today as the Sox called up Jose De La Torre to get a fresh arm in the pen. Predictably, Clayton Mortensen was put on the DL with a groin/hip ailment to make room for De La Torre. De La Torre is sure to swap places with Aceves when he’s activated to make the start.

“Clayton has been dealing with a groin and hip issue since we left Spring Training,” manager John Farrell told MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “As much as we wanted to get him for multiple innings last night, he couldn’t go after the one inning of work. That’s the move to get De La Torre here.”

Aceves, 2-1 with a 6.57 ERA, has been inconsistent throughout his up and down season with the Red Sox in 2013.
